Yograj Singh, a former Indian pacer and father of famed all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, is known for not holding back his comments and voicing his views. The 67-year-old recently challenged the future crop of Indian cricketers, including Vaibhav Suryavanshi, one of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025’s finds, to strive on their health and want to play Test cricket rather than just white-ball formats.
Suryavanshi, 14, became the youngest player in IPL history when he made his debut for the Rajasthan Royals in the tournament’s 18th edition. He captivated the cricketing world with his incredible performances, including a century against former champions Gujarat Titans in Jaipur.
“My vision includes Test cricket. Can you last five days? That is the actual test. Fair enough, 50 overs. Fair enough, 20 overs. I don’t follow these formats. However, because they (formats) exist, you should be physically capable of playing all three. Why are you struggling? Because you are only concerned with T20, IPL, and 50 overs. Today, we can’t even play 50 overs.
“That’s how we are,” Yograj Singh told Insidesport.
The former India sprinter also chastised some coaches and office bearers for working in air-conditioned quarters rather than sweating hard on the pitch with young athletes.
“Every coach and administrator wants to sit in the air conditioning and do stuff. “I am here, under 48 degrees Celsius, with a desire to produce more brilliant cricketers like Yuvraj Singh,” he added.
Suryavanshi now has a new challenge ahead of him as he has been named in the India U-19 squad for the upcoming tour of England. India U-19 are set to travel to the United Kingdom to play five Youth ODIs and two Youth Tests, which will run from June 27 to July 20. Ayush Mhatre, who made his IPL debut this season while representing the Chennai Super Kings, has been named as the captain of the side.
