Shubman Gill had a great debut as India’s Test captain. On Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley, the teenager led his side from the front and scored an undefeated 127 to set a record. Along with Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 101, the visitors finished the day with 359/3. Despite his good innings, Gill has gotten into problems for a small technical issue.

Why is Shubman Gill at risk of an ICC sanction?

While Gill’s batting won hearts, it was his choice of socks that grabbed ICC’s attention. During his innings, the right-handed batter was spotted wearing black socks, a direct breach of the ICC’s updated Clothing and Equipment Regulations. As per clause 19.45, which came into effect in May 2023, players in Test matches must wear socks that are white, cream, or light grey. Any other colour(s) worn is subject to repercussions, including fine on match fee.

Repercussions the Indian captain to face for the offence

The breach could still result in disciplinary action. If considered a Level 1 offence, Gill could be fined 10 to 20 percent of his match fee and potentially receive a demerit point. The final call rests with the match referee, who must assess whether the violation was deliberate or accidental. If Gill wore black socks due to a lack of alternatives, he might escape with just a warning.

Shubman Gill, Jaiswal take India to commanding position on Day 1

After England captain Ben Stokes opted to bowl first, India’s batters made the most of the wicket. Jaiswal continued his red-hot form against the English side, becoming the first Indian opener to score a century at Headingley. His 101 was laced with 17 boundaries. Rahul and Jaiswal added 91 runs for the opening stand before Brydon Carse removed Rahul for 42. Soon after, debutant B Sai Sudharsan was dismissed for a duck by Stokes. Gill, who walked in at No. 4, brought up his half-century in just 56 balls, the fastest in his Test career, and went on to register his sixth Test century and first outside Asia.
