Glenn Maxwell hopes to play a more prominent role as Australia’s opening bowler in the future. Maxwell has long been considered a Powerplay option for countries and franchises. The renowned all-rounder has a reputation as a tough, hard-hitting cricketer, but he has never truly shone with the ball. He wants to change that by contributing in difficult times for Australia.
He hinted at the responsibility and expressed his eagerness to make the most of it. Given the T20 World Cup, which will be hosted next year in spin bowling-friendly conditions in India and Sri Lanka, Maxwell is also trying to bowl inside the powerplay overs, which may be difficult at times given the changing dynamics of hitters in the game’s shortest format.
“I think in the subcontinent, you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on. Especially that new ball, the hard seam, being able to grip on those dry surfaces. So, it might be something we think about heading forward,” stated Maxwell, as quoted by.
Glenn Maxwell also shed light on his ecstatic celebrations after securing the wicket of Aiden Markram in the second T20I of the ongoing series.
The 36-year-old also commented on his floater-type role as a batter in order to help his team in whatever capacity possible.
“I’m just as surprised as anyone when I get a wicket. I love getting wickets. It’s very surprising anytime I get anyone out. I’m there to do a job in the Powerplay and I’m trying to execute that as well as I can. I’ve been a bit of the shuffler around the order, up and down. I’m filling holes at the moment. Even during the West Indies series, trying to combat Akeal Hosein (by) going up the top, this series going a little bit lower, trying to manage that back end. (I’m) trying to play whatever role is needed for me in this side and just try and be as adaptable as possible,” he commented.
