The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of cricket’s largest and most commercially successful leagues. Since its debut in 2008, the league has developed significantly in popularity, generating tremendous viewership and delivering life-changing possibilities for cricketers.

Many players, like Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Hardik Pandya, rose to fame through regular IPL performances and went on to play for the national squad.

However, while the lucrative league has greatly benefited Indian cricket, it has also created serious issues. One of the growing concerns is the need to judge players solely on the number of IPL titles they have won. The technique is defective by nature. Cricket is a team sport, and success in franchise leagues does not always represent individual ability or contribution.

For example, KL Rahul, one of India’s most reliable Test bats and an established performer in international cricket, has yet to win an IPL title. However, this does not reduce his contribution or talent in the sport.

The Indian Premier League is basically a business model and should not be used to determine a cricketer’s worth.

The league’s growing importance has led many young players to prioritise IPL performance over all other levels. The adjustment could be detrimental to the sport’s long-term future, particularly in the Test format, which requires patience and stamina.

While the IPL continues to influence Indian cricket, it is critical to achieve a balance. The players’ success in a single spectacular event should not eclipse their entire contribution to the game. The integrity of all cricketing formats must be respected, and individuals should be recognised for their overall ability rather than just their franchise success.
