The West Indies will host Australia in a three-match Test series beginning on June 25. The first game is set to take place at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Meanwhile, the second Test will be contested at the National Cricket Stadium in St George’s, Grenada. The third and final match of the series will be held at Kingston, Jamaica’s iconic Sabina Park.
The prized Sir Frank Worrell Trophy will be at stake during the Test series. Roston Chase will lead the West Indies, with Jomel Warrican serving as his deputy, ushering in a new era of Caribbean leadership.
Miles Bascombe, CWI Director of Cricket, stated that selections were selected in accordance with the team’s desire to developing a bold, execution-driven identity in Test cricket, with “consistency in batting output” and a “dynamic bowling attack” being critical factors in the overall assessment.
Meanwhile, head coach Daren Sammy stated that the West Indies management has studied what the best teams in the globe are doing to attain success. He stated that the goal is to close the gap with the top teams by identifying areas that require development.
“We looked at what the world’s best teams are doing and what we needed to do to close the gap. We have chosen a path, as well as a collection of players and resources, that will offer us the biggest edge as we aim to move the team up the ladder and challenge the best in the world,” Sammy said in an official CWI release.
The former West Indies captain also discussed the inclusion of Kevlon Anderson, a bright kid who has performed well in domestic cricket at the top of the order. Sammy also welcomed back Shai Hope, the team’s white-ball captain. The former captain is also looking forward to seeing how Brandon King fares on the red-ball tour.
“I’m delighted about the presence of young prospect Kevlon Anderson, who comes in after strong seasons in our domestic leagues to help provide stability in the top order, while Shai Hope’s return is welcomed given his consistency in white ball cricket. Brandon King’s inclusion fits a function we have identified as requiring extra attention to propel our team closer to the top of the rankings,” he added.
Sammy implored Caribbean fans to be patient, assuring them that their favourite side will play in a fresh way during the series.
“I am very excited about this series because we want to start strong and make our home turf a fortress during this cycle, with our passionate and proud fans behind us. The games will be difficult, but I believe in this group of players, and they are excited to wear the maroon and please our fans.”
