The Punjab Kings (PBKS) advanced to their first IPL final in 11 years after to captain Shreyas Iyer’s outstanding performance in the chase against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 on Sunday night. Despite the team’s historic chase, Iyer’s post-match rage at teammate Shashank Singh drew widespread attention.

PBKS found themselves in a difficult predicament at one point while chasing a massive objective of 204 tickets to the final game at the Narendra Modi Stadium. However, their skipper came through with an unbeaten 87 from 41 balls, including five fours and eight sixes.

His heroics enabled PBKS to accomplish the most successful run chase against MI in IPL history, gaining a ticket in the summit battle against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, Iyer’s annoyance with Shashank surfaced during the customary post-match handshake. A video of the event rapidly went viral, depicting Iyer abusing and refusing to interact with Shashank.

Shreyas Iyer becomes first-ever captain to take three different franchises to an IPL final

The root of his anger came from a moment in the 17th over of the run chase. With PBKS requiring 35 runs from 21 balls and still having six wickets in hand, the team was in a decent position. But Shashank, who had just arrived at the crease, was run out for two off three deliveries due to lazy running between the wickets.

Facing a low full toss from Trent Boult, the right-handed batter drove the ball to mid-on and ran for a single. Hardik Pandya’s position at mid-on produced a direct hit at the non-striker’s end, catching the batter short of the crease. Replays revealed the 33-year-old was jogging initially and only picked up pace later, costing him his wicket.

The dismissal handed MI a sudden opening, especially with Jasprit Bumrah still having one over left. Despite the dismissal, Iyer held on to one end brilliantly and took his team over the line. He also became the first-ever captain to take three different franchises to an IPL final.
