On Thursday, May 22, the Gujarat Titans (GT) were defeated by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 33 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

Gujarat’s legendary troika of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler were dismissed in the 10th over while chasing a 236-run mark. Sherfane Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan were expected to lead Gujarat to a resounding victory. They established an 86-run stand off 40 balls to give Lucknow pause, but it was insufficient in the end. Meanwhile, if Abdul Samad had scored a direct hit in the chase’s 11th over, the partnership would have been broken considerably sooner.

Sherfane Rutherford, who was on six off five at the time, smashed a William O’Rourke delivery straight to Samad at mid-off.

The Caribbean batter dashed towards the non-striker’s end, but O’Rourke noticed him charging down the same path. The pacer attempted to sway away from Rutherford, but the batsman collided with the bowler, causing both to fall to the ground. Rutherford would have been out by miles if Samad had struck the stumps, which he did not do.

Rutherford was eventually dismissed by O’Rourke in the 17th over, having scored 38 off 22 balls. Shahrukh continued to battle, but he kept losing wickets at the other end. Eventually, he was removed for 57 off 29 balls. O’Rourke was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 3/27 in four overs.

Earlier in the contest, Mitchell Marsh hit his first IPL century, hitting 117 off 64 balls with 10 fours and eight sixes. Nicholas Pooran also contributed with an undefeated 56 from 27 balls.
