In the ODI World Cup 2023, Netherlands will play
Bangladesh on Saturday, October 28 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Both captains, Scott Edwards and Shakib Al Hasan, made two changes to their starting lineups, and Roelof van der Merwe and Nasum Ahmed were unexpectedly left off of both sides. Roelof van der Merwe notably dropped out due to illness.
The Netherlands benched Teja Nidamanuru in addition to van der Merwe in order to insert veteran Wesley Barresi and leg-spinner Shariz Ahmad into the playing lineup. The oldest player to play in the ODI World Cup 2023 is Barresi, 39. He is the only current player who participated in the Netherlands’ 2011 final appearance at the grand tournament.
Shariz, 20, is making his World Cup debut in the meanwhile. With a mere 13.80 average over his five games, Nidamanuru’s elimination was warranted.
However, as spin-bowling all-rounder Mahedi Hasan and seasoned seamer Taskin Ahmed rejoined the team, Bangladesh dropped Hasan Mahmud along with Nasum. After taking four wickets in the match against England, the former was benched for the remaining games. His off-spin bowling could provide a threat to the Netherlands, who have struggled to contain strong spinners. The Eden Gardens pitch, which usually has something in it for the pacers up front, can also help Taskin.
At the toss, what did the captains say?
After winning the toss, Edwards decided to bat first because he thought the surface appeared decent. He claimed that aside from their 309-run loss to Australia in their previous match, his squad had played excellent cricket this season. Shakib, who spent a lot of time with the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens playing cricket, talked about how important it is to do well in the PowerPlay both batting and bowling.
“It looks like a nice wicket, so we’ll bat first. We’re hoping to score quickly. The upside is that things will change quickly, therefore we should move on from the loss. We must only concentrate on the upcoming games since we have big expectations for ourselves. We have been playing some very good cricket, apart from the last match.
There are two changes: Barresi replaces Teja, and Shariz takes Roelof van der Merwe place,” Edwards stated.
“We have to do better with batting and bowling, especially in the powerplay,” stated Shakib Al Hasan. We’ll have the momentum if we can pull that off. Many Bangladeshis have crossed the border and settled in Kolkata, where we also share a common language and culture. Taskin Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan replace Nasum Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud in the two alterations.”
