In the Women’s Premier League 2024 (WPL 2024), Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women (RCB-W) made history by defeating Delhi Capitals (DC-W) in the championship game. As a result, the Smriti Mandhana-captained team helped the RCB franchise win its first championship in sixteen years. Notably, despite making it to the finals three times (in 2009, 2011 and 2016, respectively), RCB’s men’s squad has never taken home an IPL trophy since its founding in 2008.
Despite their poor performance in the competition, the Bengaluru-based team has a sizable fan base thanks to their captain, renowned Indian batsman Virat Kohli. Before the 2008 IPL season, RCB selected Kohli in an Under-19 draft, and the rest is history. The cricket player from Delhi quickly progressed through the ranks to become one of the game’s biggest stars.
The former RCB captain hasn’t won an IPL championship, despite his tremendous accomplishments in the game of cricket. At the RCB unbox event held recently at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Kohli expressed his congratulations to the women’s team for winning the WPL and expressed his hope that the squad will win two IPL championships in 2024. The star hitter went on to say that winning an IPL championship is something he has always wanted to experience.
I’ll do all in my power and experience to fulfill this commitment to the franchise and its supporters: Virat Kohli
“With the trophies, hopefully we can double it up. That will be genuinely exceptional. I will always be here, trying to be a member of the team that takes home the first prize. I’ll do everything in my power and experience to fulfill the fans’ and the franchise’s expectations. “It is also my dream to experience the thrill of winning the Indian Premier League,” stated Kohli during the RCB unboxing event.

Notably, the season-opening match between RCB and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will take place on Friday, March 22, at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, to kick off the IPL 2024 campaign. The fans of RCB will once again be looking to Kohli to use his incredible batting performances to guide their team into the playoffs.
