In the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), there was a touching moment when Pat Cummins, the captain of SRH, withdrew to impede the field appeal against Ravindra Jadeja. The event happened on the fourth ball of Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s second-to-last over, when Jadeja played a yorker back to the bowler.
Bhuvneshwar attempted to strike the stumps when he noticed that the batsman had left the crease, but Jadeja, who was frantically attempting to return to the popping crease, blocked the throw and took a direct hit from the ball. On-field umpires Rohan Pandit and Yeshwant Barde made the decision to submit the incident to the third umpire after it happened.
The captain of SRH, Pat Cummins, chose not to do so and disregarded the spirit of the match. Replays showed unequivocally that the CSK batter was simply trying to get inside the crease when he was hit, not that he intended to get in the way of the throw. Consequently, fans praised Cummins for his thoughtful action.
