At the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, May 21, the Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated the Delhi Capitals (DC) to advance to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs.
Due to his illness, Axar Patel was unable to serve in Delhi; instead, Faf du Plessis assumed leadership. After winning the toss, the South African mainstay chose to field first. Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton had some outstanding shots following Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal. But in the fifth and sixth overs, respectively, they left the game.
On a slick surface, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma tried to establish a foundation. They had to wait since they were unable to reach the boundaries. Run-scoring was challenging, and the spinners had turn available. Tilak and Suryakumar stitched a 55-run stand off 49 deliveries before departing for a run-a-ball 27.
As MI reached 132/5 in 18 overs, Hardik Pandya was removed cheaply as DC attempted to limit the hosts to a lower-than-ideal total. But Suryakumar and Naman Dhir brought them to task when Mukesh Kumar and Dhushmantha Chameera let up 27 and 21 runs in the final two overs. Naman scored 24 not out off eight deliveries, while Suryakumar finished undefeated at 73 off 43 balls. MI achieved an impressive 180/5 final score.
During the first three overs of their reply, DC lost the wickets of du Plessis and KL Rahul, two dependable batsmen, and they never really bounced back. In just ten overs, they lost half of their team for 65 runs. Attempts were made by Sameer Rizvi and Ashutosh Sharma to lead the visitors to an incredible victory. The pair’s chances of making the playoffs were dashed, though, when Mitchell Santner dismissed them in the fifteenth over. In the end, MI triumphed by 59 runs after the visiting team was bowled out for 121 in 18.2 overs.
With final stats of 3/11 in four overs, Santner was the best bowler. In the meantime, Jasprit Bumrah also scored three points. Each of the other MI bowlers who took a wicket on Wednesday contributed to the total. The Capitals were eliminated from the postseason chase as the final team after this loss.
