On Saturday, October 21, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023’s Match 20 between England and South Africa was the tournament’s first game to be played at Mumbai’s famed Wankhede Stadium. With a rout of the reigning champions by a huge margin of 229 runs, the Proteas won the game. In addition to South Africa’s strong performance on the field, a touching moment was also seen in the audience during the game.
On camera, Wankhede Stadium spectators can be seen screaming Sachin Tendulkar’s name. This video has gone viral on social media.
It was Tim de Leede’s first international wicket when he dismissed Sachin Tendulkar.
Notably, Tendulkar was born in Mumbai and spent a lot of time playing cricket there. In 2011, India defeated Sri Lanka to win their second ODI World Cup, and he later fulfilled his dream of winning the tournament there. Therefore, each every game played in the city, the supporters never fail to honor the great man’s legacy by screaming his name.

Resuming the game, after being given the opportunity to bat first, South Africa lost their opener Quinton de Kock (4 off 2) on the very first pitch of the innings. However, Reeza Hendricks (85 off 75) and Rassie van der Dussen (60 off 61) saved the South African innings after the early dismissal with their 121-run partnership off 116 balls.
Breathtaking performances by Heinrich Klaasen (109 off 67) and Marco Jansen (75* off 42) drove South Africa to a massive score. Heinrich Klaasen’s amazing hundred completely destroyed the English bowlers. The best English bowler by far was Reece Topley, who took 3/88 in 8.5 overs.
In response, England’s chase never got off the ground as they were left floundering at 38/4 after 8.1 overs, thanks to Jansen’s dismissals of Dawid Malan (6 off 11) and Joe Root (2 off 6) in back-to-back overs. The reigning champions could not recover after that and were bowled out for 170 in 22 overs.
Mark Wood is confronted by Heinrich Klaasen’s shout in celebration of his 100th run.
The bowlers that performed best for South Africa were Gerald Coetzee, who picked up 3/35 in four overs, Lungi Ngidi (2/26 in five overs), and Jansen (2/35 in five overs), who each took two wickets.
