Australia won the World Test Championship for the 2021-2023 cycle with a 209-run victory over India. Nathan Lyon distinguished himself in the fourth inning by dismissing four Indian batsmen. Ravi Chandra Ashwin, India’s premier off-spinner and the No. 1 bowler in the ICC Test rankings, was left on the bench and forced to witness his team’s lacklustre performance.
In an interview with The Indian Express, the Chennai-born spinner criticised those who labelled him as a “overthinker.” Ravi Chandra Ashwin explained that he would not have had to overthink if he had been given the assurance that he would play regularly for India.
“Many individuals marketed and positioned me as an overthinker. A person who is able to acquire 15–20 matches on the fly does not need to engage in mental overthinking. Because it is my work, a person who knows they will receive only two games will be traumatised and overthink it. This is my trip. So this is what I prefer. If someone were to tell me, “You will play 15 matches, you will be cared for, you will be this, you are responsible for players, and you are the commander, I would not overthink the situation. Why would I do that?
“It is unfair to accuse a person of being an overthinker because his voyage is his own. And no one has the right or authority to do so.”
Ravi chandran Ashwin explains why he was not considered for the Test captaincy of India.
When Virat Kohli stepped down as Test captain, Rohit Sharma assumed the role. Rohit was successful in defeating Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravichandran Ashwin. According to the 36-year-old, being labelled an overthinker has worked against him, and the fact that some veteran cricketers believed he would struggle to make the playing XI in overseas Tests did not assist his case when India’s Test captaincy role was being determined.
“Was it designed to operate against me? And, as I previously stated, there have been statements made all along when leadership questions have been posed to me, and there have been individuals claiming that my name is not listed first when India tours abroad.
I have no control over whether that name appears first or not on the document. If I earned it, it must be there, according to my belief. As previously stated, I have no complaints and no time to look back and hurl insults or express regret. He stated, “I have no regrets about anyone.”
Ashwin is currently participating in the Tamil Nadu Premier League for the Dindigul Dragons. In July, India and West Indies will play two Tests in the Caribbean, where Ashwin will seek to add to his 474 wickets in the format.
