West Indies beat Afghanistan by 9 wickets

That's all we have from this Test match. It got over in the blink of an eye. We look forward to your company in future and in the meantime, you can hop over to the concerned tab to catch all the updates from the D/N Adelaide Test between Australia and Pakistan. Cheers!
West Indian skipper, Jason Holder terms it as an important win for them. Reminds about the India series which was really tough for them and they wanted to end the year on a high. Praises his boys for sticking together as a unit and is really happy with the way new guys have grabbed the opportunity. Lauds Brooks for his knock and calls Cornwall's bowling performance as amazing. Shares that it was his gut feeling to bowl first. Tells that Phil Simmons (coach) has been a pivotal member. Credits the management staff for helping the team in every possible manner. Further adds that he is optimistic about the future of the team and is looking forward to growing with the team. Concludes by saying that when they spend time together and are comfortable with each other, the job becomes a lot easier.
Rahkeem Cornwall is the unanimous choice for the Man of the Match award! He is very happy after picking a 10-wicket haul in just his second test match. Thanks the Almighty and shares that playing for West Indies is a dream for every kid growing up to play for their nation. Tells that the pitches back home are also similar and the series against India helped him a great deal. Thanks everyone for the support and wants to contribute with the bat as well in the coming matches. On being asked about his family's reaction, he replies that there is a celebratory environment back home.
Afghanistan skipper, Rashid Khan admits that they have been struggling in the longer formats, especially with the bat. Feels if they improve in that area, they have the potential to trouble good teams. Hopes to recover from their mistakes. Adds that the team needs more exposure in ODIs and Tests as that will stand them in good stead. Feels that playing more and more longer formats will help them the most. Praises Amir Hamza on his debut and commends the job that he did for them but also states that they missed the services of Mohammad Nabi in this match. Feels that they are not taking the innings deep with the bat and that is what they need to improve upon. Tells that overall it was quite disappointing for them and they will try to improve. States that their main focus from hereon will be on the Asia Cup and ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Given Cornwall's success, we thought the class of Rashid Khan would return the favour but that didn't happen. The Afghan spinners did succeed in picking wickets but on the back of a fabulous century by Shamarh Brooks, West Indies gained a 90-run lead which on this deck was a handful. In the second attempt with the bat, Afghanistan showed early improvement with their openers putting on a 53-run stand but their innings fell completely flat on its face after that. Eventually, they got bowled out for just 120 and Jason Holder, Roston Chase and Rahkeem Cornwall hunted down 3 wickets apiece. Rahkeem finished with a 10-wicket haul and he along with Brooks played a big hand in West Indies' comprehensive victory.
Afghanistan trounced! Rahkeem proved to be a big 'corn' in their 'wall' as the giant bowler outclassed them in their own game, i.e. spin. It was a really tough Test match for the newbies in Test cricket. One thought that Jason Holder missed the trick by electing to bowl first on a turning deck but Cornwall soon proved his skipper's call to be the right one. He snapped a 7-fer in the first innings and played a giant role in bundling out Afghanistan for just 187.
Early morning walk in the park for West Indies in Lucknow! A thumping victory for them as they chased down the target of 31 runs without breaking a sweat. Afghanistan thoroughly thrashed!

FOUR! That will be that. WEST INDIES WIN BY 9 WICKETS! A comprehensive victory for them. They were always in ascendancy throughout the Test. Coming back to the ball, it was a tossed up delivery outside off, Campbell lofts it over the mid off fielder and the ball crosses the fence for a boundary.

OUT! Something to cheer for Afghanistan here. Hamza has been brilliant throughout the Test. This time he bowls a floated delivery outside off, Brathwaite looks to defend that to the off side but gets the faintest of outside edges on it. The keeper, Afsar Zazai holds onto it superbly. Brathwaite fails for the second time in this Test. However, not that it will matter to the team's cause in this match.

FOUR! The chase is on! Ahmadzai bowls one on the pads, Brathwaite just flicks it through the mid-wicket region . The fielder from deep square leg runs to his left but fails to cut it off inside the ropes. The ball crosses the ropes for the boundary.
The Afghanistan players are out in the middle. Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell have come out to complete the job which they will be looking to finish as soon as possible. Ahmadzai to start the proceedings for Afghanistan.
In order to win the Test match, West Indies need just 31 runs to win. There literally seems no hope for Afghanistan and the only consolation for them would be to take as many wickets as they can. Stay tuned for the last innings of the match.
The West Indies bowling was superb with pace and bounce on offer for the spinners. Roston Chase and Rahkeem Cornwall picked up 3-fers and so did the skipper Jason Holder, who made light work of taking the wickets on Day 3. Cornwall will be the one who will be the happiest as this has become a ten-wicket match for him.
The less said about the Afghanistan bating, the better. After the opening stand gave them hope of staging a fight against the Windies, they collapsed like nine-pins. Just the two openers could come out with some credit to their name. Other than them, only one batter crossed even the double-digit mark. It has been a huge collapse for them, from 53 for no loss to 120 all out.
So, with 3 wickets in hand on Day 3, Aghanistan have added just 11 runs to their lead as they have been bowled out for just 120 runs. The target for West Indies is just 31 runs and they will be looking to finish it off as quickly as possible.

OUT! CAUGHT! The last one goes down. The Afghanistan innings comes to an end. Just 8 overs into Day 3 and Afghanistan have been bundled out. Holder takes his third of the morning. Excellent from the tall West Indian skipper. This time he lands one on a length and around off, Zazai looks to punch it through the off side. But he could only manage a faint nick on it. The keeper, Shane Dowrich gobbles it up with ease.

Tossed up on middle and leg, driven to long on. A single taken. First runs of the day.
We are all set to begin as the West Indies players make their way onto the field. Jason Holder is sharing a few insights as they disperse to take their respective fielding positions. Out walk the two Afghanistan batsmen, Afsar Zazai is joined by his skipper Rashid Khan in the middle. Rahkeem Cornwall to start the proceedings. Here we go...
Alistair Campbell is down for the Pitch report. Says that it is a difficult surface to bat on. There are patches and cracks on the surface and the key to getting wickets here is to bowl accurately just like Rahkeem Cornwall did.
Will the match end today in the first session itself? Or will Afghanistan show some fight and post a lead where they can hope for a miracle? Welcome to Day 3 of the one-off Test match between Afghanistan and West Indies. After bamboozling Afghanistan on Day 1 itself and then gaining a handy 90-run lead, West Indies bowled superbly in the second innings as well. Rahkeem Cornwall and Roston Chase have again been in the thick of things as both picked up 3-fers in the second innings. Afghanistan are currently reeling at 109/7 with a paltry lead of 19 runs. The question that pops up is with just 3 wickets in hand, how many more can Afghanistan add? West Indies, on the other hand, will look to wrap up the innings as soon as possible and then chase the total down in a flash and win the match. Stay tuned for all the action!
... Day 3, session 1 ...
30 minutes? 60 minutes? One session? How long will the game last on Day 3? West Indies would be keen to wrap things up quickly in the morning while Afghanistan will hope that the lower order tries to get as many runs as possible. Will Cornwall get a 5-fer? Will Chase get, rather? Or neither? Uufff... too many questions. Head spinning. Let us do one thing. Let us shut shop for the night, take some rest and return on Friday morning at 9.30 am local (0400 GMT) for the final rites of this one-off Test. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Brooks says that getting to his maiden Test century is a great feeling. Mentions about his 50 against India and says this is a good feeling. Tells that he tried to keep Rashid out as much as possible and that helped him. On his return to cricket, Brooks says that he has worked hard to make a comeback to the West Indian side. Says that they had 5 wickets in sight (at the innings break) but now that they have got 7, they will try to finish the game off on the third day.
The heroes of the day - Shamarh Brooks and Rahkeem Cornwall. The former lit the day with a fantastic century while the latter, after entering the record books on Wednesday evening, created another record by becoming the first West Indian spinner to take a 10-fer in the subcontinent! But it is not the big man down for an interview. It is Brooks now, who is giving his thoughts to Alistair Campbell.
The day belonged to Shamarh Brooks, whose 111 helped West Indies take a lead of 90. Then, the spin twins took over. Not Cornwall and Warrican - but Cornwall and Chase. They shared 6 wickets between themselves and the Afghans had no clue whatsoever.
Three times in the game, Afghanistan have lost a wicket at the stroke of a break - once before Lunch on Day 1, then before Tea on the same day and now, before Stumps. They have shown no gumption to stay in the middle and hence, are collapsing like a pack of cards. From 84/1 to 111/7 in the first innings and here, from 53/0 to 59/4 and again from 96/4 to 109/7. It is all about partnerships, something which they are yet to understand.
Wo ho! What is this? A 2-and-something Test? 12 wickets on Day 1, 15 on Day 2! Afghanistan are in tatters, effectively 19/7 and in all likelihood, this is not going to last more than an hour on Friday.

OUT! CAUGHT! Well, perhaps Ahmadi should have continued counter-attacking! Because the moment he looks to defend, he nicks one. Where were you, Roston Chase, all this time? From the time he has come on to bowl, he has caused ripples. He has taken his 3rd in the 3 overs he has bowled so far. Coming onto the delivery, Chase tosses one up on the off stump, Ahmadi prods forward and looks to defend it. The ball spins away and takes the outside edge. It is low but Rahkeem Cornwall at first slip bends down and takes the catch in his bucket hands. With this, the umpires also call STUMPS ON DAY 2.

FOUR! Oh dear... Ahmadi well, is playing like Shahid Afridi, or a Virender Sehwag, one would assume. Pardon us for the comparisons but the attitude is compelling us to do so. Just one ball is left for Stumps but Javed does not care. Gets a full flighted ball and goes hard over mid off. The result is a one-bounce boundary but why play these shots at this stage? Can't the counter-attack be reserved for tomorrow?

We are done with the quota of the overs for the day. But because there is still time left, plenty at that, 30 minutes to be precise, so the play goes on. The rule is - MINIMUM of 90 overs in a day or 6 hours - whichever comes LATE.

IT IS A NO BALL! Cornwall oversteps! Big reprieve for Ahmadi. A nice delivery, flighted on middle, Ahmadi looked to defend but extra bounce on that meant that an inside edge was induced onto the pads. It lobbed to leg gully where Jason Holder took a comfortable catch. Now, the West Indians start to celebrate but the umpire wants to check for overstepping. Here come the replays. They show that Cornwall has landed his foot on the line! The decision is conveyed and Cornwall is now asking umpire Menon where his foot was. Too late now!
Now then! Bat-pad and caught at leg gully! But is it a no ball? They are referring it upstairs and dear me - the foot has landed on the line! Reprieve for Afghanistan.

Afghanistan will feel disappointed. With plenty of spinners in their ranks, they were way below par as compared to Rahkeem Cornwall. Amir Hamza did pick up 5 wickets but there was no consistent control over the lines or lengths from both, Hamza and Rashid. If the skipper had bowled to his true potential, perhaps this could have become a one-inning shootout.
90 is the lead for West Indies then. That is a massive positive, given the turn the pitch has taken so far. Brooks' Nelson has enabled the Caribbeans to be in a strong position, with good support from Campbell and Dowrich. TEA HAS BEEN TAKEN AS WELL, given that 10 minutes are left for the break.

OUT! Bowled' em! The centurion departs now, in search of quick runs. A fullish length ball on middle, Brooks lines himself for the slog sweep but plays the shot all around the ball. OUT! LBW! Skipper strikes and the big man has to depart. A boundary and now he has to go. Got 7 wickets with the ball but cannot contribute much with the willow. Superb comeback from Rashid. This pitched outside off and then turned into Cornwall. Rahkeem looked to defend but missed. The ball hits the pads and Rashid roars out an appeal. The umpire raises the finger. Cornwall doesn't seem to be happy. Seems like he nicked the ball there. Yes, the replays confirm and the big man was clearly not happy as he was trudging off, showing his bat to the umpire there. A wicket for the Afghans nonetheless.

OUT! That is a terrific piece of stumping from Afsar Zazai! For all his shouts and constant chatter behind the wickets, this is some excellent work because his concentration is not wavering at all. The tall Holder fails to hold himself and is gone cheaply. Hamza tosses one up around off and gives it a bit off more air to it. Holder lunges to defend but is beaten by pace. His back leg goes up in the air slightly, probably for not even half a second. But that is enough for Zazai behind the wickets as he is super quick to whip the bails off in a flash. He is confident and goes for the appeal. The umpire goes upstairs to check and then the replays come in. It shows that Jason had lifted his foot in the air and got back in, but only after Afsar had dislodged the bails. Holder takes the long walk back.

OUT! LBW! Zahir Khan gets the breakthrough at last. After numerous cries of LBW and caught behinds, finally, the umpire has consented to one. End of an excellent partnership between Shane Dowrich and Shamarh Brooks. Flighted delivery on middle, Dowrich looks to defend but gets hit on the pads. The bowler appeals for lbw and the umpire raises his finger. This one looked plumb, with the ball showing to be pitching in line and just spinning in a bit, hitting the batsman in front of middle stump. A very good knock from Dowrich. Analyzing Shamarh Brooks, he comes across as one of those few unusual West Indian batsmen who have a very good technique. Less of flair. He has played the spinners very tactfully. We are back for the second session. The Afghanistan players are out in the middle. Shamarh Brooks and Shane Dowrich will resume their innings for West Indies. Rashid Khan will start the proceedings after Lunch.
... Day 2, Session 2 ...
Shamarh Brooks has played just 2 Tests but he seems to be a man brimming with confidence. His 75 from 129 balls have been a combination of attack and defense, punishing the poor balls and seeing out the good ones. Afghanistan spinners have bowled well, with plenty of shouts from behind the wickets but the counter-attack from the Caribbeans has meant that the dot balls have not been allowed to pile up. Join us back at 12.10 pm local (0640 GMT) to see how the afternoon session pans out.
Starting the day in foggy conditions, the pair of Campbell and Brooks continued from where it left off last night. The duo added 82 for the third wicket, before a cheeky shot and a blinder from Ihsanullah brought about the downfall of Campbell. That in turn, led to a collapse as West Indies slipped from 116/2 to 150/5. But since then, Dowrich has given excellent company to Brooks and the partnership is worth 45 now.
Entertaining session. 127/3 in 33 overs. West Indies have gone past Afghanistan's score and with 5 wickets left, they will be hoping to stretch this current lead of 8 and put more pressure on Rashid Khan and his team.

The Afghans needed something special to break this partnership and they have got it. Full and outside off, Campbell gets down to paddle but the ball bounces a touch extra, hits the glove and lobs behind towards the vacant leg slip region. Here comes Ihsanullah's athleticism. He is at first slip and is watching the ball like a hawk. Starts running to his right as soon as he sees John attempt the paddle and then dives once he sees the ball airborne. WEATHER - How is the weather? Winter is setting in India and given that Lucknow is closer to the northern parts, it is pretty chill and hazy. Visibility could be an issue but the good news is that there will not be any delay and we are set to start on time.
How do the hosts look at this? No point in dwelling over the fact that they could manage only 187. Bygones are bygones. If they can manage to restrict the West Indies lead to under 50, there is still a possibility of a one-inning shootout. Once that happens, 4th innings batting is never gonna be easy. The Caribbeans are stroke-makers, so perhaps stifle the run flow, induce mistakes and get wickets would be the mantra. From the visitors' point of view, seeing off the first hour and then capitalizing on the day would be ideal. If they bat through the day, they should get somewhere between 300-350, which would, in all means, shut the door for the Afghans.
The track is spinning but it is by no means a minefield. Yes, batting is a bit difficult but given that it is only Day 2, it will not be so difficult. Javed Ahmadi and Ihsanullah showed in the morning session yesterday how to bat while John Campbell and Shamarh Brooks are already playing well. The key is to get oneself set. Once you are in, batting becomes easier. Having said that, it is not a type of pitch where you are always in once set - so concentration and focus are important.
'Bowling, Shane!' Remember this? A certain Adam Gilchrist used to shout behind the stumps when the wizard Shane Warne used to bowl. On Wednesday, there was no use of those two words by Shane Dowrich but boy, Rahkeem Rashawn 'Shane' Cornwall - the man from Antigua, bowled like Shane Warne, albeit off spin, making the Afghan batsmen dance to his turn and bounce as he registered the best ever figures in India in 2019 and also the second best overall this year. His 7/75 derailed what was seeming to look like a train as Afghanistan collapsed from 84/1 to 187 all out. A boring day suddenly became exciting as spin dictated terms. How will Thursday pan out? Hello and a warm welcome to the second day of the one-off Test between Afghanistan and West Indies in Lucknow.
... DAY 2 ...
West Indies would have loved to end the day unscathed but that was not the case as the Afghan spinners were all over them and on full fire. The deficit though, is just 119, so one good stand could put Afghanistan under tremendous pressure. So Day 2 promises to be a cracker. With the pitch deteriorating further it will be a challenge for the West Indian batting to resist the likes of Rashid Khan and Amir Hamza. Do join us on Thursday, 28th November, 2019, for Day 2 at 0930 local (0400 GMT). Till then take care, goodbye.
Rahkeem Cornwall says that the strength when he bowls comes from the upper body. Adds that staying balanced and trying to bowl in the right areas are the keys. Feels that the ball is turning and sticking a lot in the surface and if the spinners bowl in the right areas, there is a lot that they can extract from this pitch.
Speaking of the Afghanistan batting, they never looked settled and comfortable against the speedsters or the spinners. Wrong technique and false shots summed up their batting. They were clueless to the spin of Warrican and Cornwall. They collapsed from 84/1 to 111/7. If not for Afsar Zazai and Amir Hamza's fightback, Afghanistan would have failed to reach even 150. Man of the day Rahkeem Cornwall is down for a chat with Alistair Campbell.
All in all an eventful day of Test cricket. 12 wickets fell in a day which belonged to one man, Rahkeem Cornwall. The giant man wreaked havoc in the Afghan camp with his offies. His 7/75 are the best figures in an innings in India, since 2018. Wow. He terrorized even the best in business with his turn and bounce. The day started with Holder winning the toss and putting in the hosts to bat. But soon he was in doubt when there was no assistance to the pacers. Then came the man Rahkeem Cornwall and what he did was remarkable. He generated turn and bounce to trouble the Afghan batsmen. Jason Holder picked up two wickets while Warrican took one.

FOUR! Misfield. West Indies are up and running, courtesy a poor piece of effort. Ahmadzai bowls one on the pads, Brathwaite flicks it off his pads towards fine leg. The fielder in the deep runs to his right but fails to keep the ball in play. The ball crosses the fence for a boundary.
The players are out in the middle. Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell will open the batting for West Indies. Yamin Ahmadzai will start the proceedings for Afghanistan.
How will Afghanistan be able to bounce back from this poor show with the bat? 19 overs left in the day. Can they take 2-3 wickets at least? Stay tuned for the Windies' reply.
Hard to explain Afghanistan's state of mind. What bit them? Do they be happy with 187 on a spinning surface? One reckons that it is 60 under par. Disappointing aspect is that they were not bounced out or beaten by pace. Pure off spin consumed them where only 4 batters showed some grit.
Bowled out under 70 overs. Now, it looks like a good toss to win. But at 84/1, Holder would have had his doubts. The wicket of Javed Ahmadi sparked a collapse, with Rahkeem Cornwall running through the Afghan batting line-up. The other bowlers were barely present, leave aside Holder, who chipped in with a couple of scalps.

We are back for the final session of the day. The West Indies players are out in the middle. Amir Hamza will be joined by Yamin Ahmadzai in the middle for Afghanistan. Jason Holder will start the proceedings for the final session.
... Day 1, Session 3 ...
It has all turned pear-shaped for the 'home' side. They were looking in good shape at 84/1 but then collapsed to 111/7. The 54-run stand between Zazai and Hamza did stave off some respect but they need to get at least 250 to be somewhat competitive. The pitch is turning and West Indies would like to bat only once. First, their aim would be to wrap up the Afghans well inside 200 and bat for a good chunk of the final session. Join us back at 2.30 pm local (0900 GMT).
Cornwall - the refresher! A wicket in the final over before Lunch and a wicket in the final over before Tea. He has taken 75 percent of the wickets to fall, putting Afghanistan right into a mire. What a session for West Indies - 5/75 in 30.2 overs - 4 of those going to the offie.

OUT! LBW! Cornwall has his 6th. Full and around off, spinning in, Zazai gets deep in his crease and shoulders arms. Very risky to do that in India. The ball hits his pads, Cornwall appeals and umpire Reiffel agrees. No DRS, no Hawk Eye available to assist us but to the naked eye, it seems like it might have been spinning down leg. TEA ON DAY 1!

We are back for the second session. The West Indies players are out in the middle. Rahmat Shah will be joined by Asghar Afghan in the middle. Rahkeem Cornwall will complete his over.
... Day 1, Session 2 ...
With the pendulum slightly tilting towards the West Indies, it would be a challenge for the Afghan batsmen to play the likes of Chase, Cornwall and Warrican. The pitch being dry and the odd ball keeping low means that batting will be tough in the coming sessions. Do join us for the afternoon session shortly.
What was turning out to be a cold session turns out to be a good one for West Indies. After opting to bat things looked bleak as both Holder and Roach sprayed all around the pitch. The Afghan batsmen initially looked at sea but soon had their eyes set and the runs started to flow. To everyone's surprise Holder tossed the ball to the giant Rahkeem Cornwall. Cornwall started to generate uneven bounce and sharp turn as he scalped the wicket of Ibrahim Zadran, jolting the Afghanistan innings early on. As the Lunch break was nearing Jomel Warrican was introduced and he too was into the wickets column as he had the attacking Javed Ahmadi hole out to long off. Just when one thought that the session was at even stevens, Cornwall went onto get his second of the innings.

OUT! CAUGHT! A wicket just at the stroke of the break! Ihsanullah will be distraught. He watched off the entire session, only to be dismissed at the close. Flighted delivery on off, Ihsanullah looks to defend off the front foot but gets an outside edge on this one. It goes towards first slip where Shai Hope takes a simple catch. The umpires make the batsman wait as they are checking for a possible no ball but replays show that it was just behind the line. THAT WILL BE LUNCH ON DAY 1!

DRINKS BREAK. A no-hour, shall we say? A captain wins the toss, elects to field, perhaps looking at the moisture and juice on the wicket but his new-ball bowlers find no extract. Then a spinner comes on and strikes, albeit which is debatable. On the positive aspect, West Indies have done well to keep the run rate in check while Afghanistan have stuck to their basics, not playing any rash shot. If they bat well, they can make the Windies toil here.

The anthems are done and the players are out in the middle. Ibrahim Zadran and Javed Ahmadi will open for the Afghans. KEMAR ROACH, one of two seamers in the side, will start off proceedings with the new ball. Zadran to face. Here we go...
We are all set for the day and game to begin. The national anthems are being played. West Indies' first.
WEST INDIES (PLAYING XI) - Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Shai Hope, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder (c), Shane Dowrich (wk), Rahkeem Cornwall, Kemar Roach and Jomel Warrican.
AFGHANISTAN (PLAYING XI) - Ibrahim Zadran, Javed Ahmadi, Rahmat Shah, Ihsanullah, Asghar Afghan, Amir Hamza (DEBUT), Afsar Zazai (wk), Rashid Khan (c), Nasir Jamal (DEBUT), Yamin Ahmadzai and Zahir Khan.
TOSS - Interesting. Jason Holder has won the toss and ELECTED TO FIELD! Who does that in India? Brave call. Let us see how their quicks make use of the pitch upfront.
WEATHER - It is a hazy morning, with winter setting in the northern parts of India. That also means early sunset, which could cause the issue of bad light around 4 in the evening. The humidity is a massive 83 percent, which means the players will sweat it out post Lunch.
A Test match in India, not involving India. How many times do you see that?
