West Indies beat Afghanistan by 7 wickets

That is it from this game then. Afghanistan will have the chance to level the series when both the sides return on the same ground on 9th November for the 2nd ODI of the 3-match series. That game starts at 1400 local (0830 GMT). Till then, take care!
Man of the Match, Roston Chase, says the pitch was not easy to bat on and that helped him when he was bowling. States he was pleased they kept them under 200. Ends by saying the skipper has always supported him and he just needs to bat his normal way and he need not do anything special.
West Indies skipper, Kieron Pollard, says losing early wickets has been an issue for them but they dug it out well today. States Chase and Hope showed their class and they fulfilled their roles and it was a complete team effort. Mentions they have had chats about how they want to go about the game, Jason Holder was brilliant with the new ball, the debutants were also good, there were a couple of blemishes but it was a good overall performance.
Afghanistan skipper, Rashid Khan, says 240-250 would have been a good score. Further adds had they fielded well and bowled well even this could have been defended. States the Windies gave them a few opportunities but they could not capitalize and then they took the game away from them completely. Ends by saying they will learn a lot from this game and come out with an improved performance in the next one.
Earlier in the day, it was the Windies bowlers who set the match up for them! They did extremely well to bowl Afghanistan out for below 200 especially after 111-run stand between Ali Khil and Rahmat Shah. When the two were batting, 250 seemed possible but in the end, exceptional spells by Holder and Chase with good support by the others saw them being bundled out for 6 short of 200 which was chased easily.
The Afghanistan bowling began nicely but started running out of gas as the game progressed. Not sure what the actual reason was, maybe the dew or just that the wicket eased out way too much in the end though, it seemed that Afghanistan were at least 50 runs short of what could have been a competitive total.
Way too easy in the end for the Windies! All the talks about the pitch being tough, there is a lot of purchase for the spinners and the Afghan spinners could cause a lot of problem has been thrown out of the window. One partnership is what they needed and they got a huge one, 163-run stand between Hope and Chase. However, West Indies were in a spot of bother when the two joined association but the duo played their shots and tackled the Afghanistan spinners at ease. Hope remained unbeaten. Chase though was unfortunate to miss out on his first ODI ton by just the six runs. However, they will be happy with this victory.

OUT! TIMBER! Heartbreak for Chase! He falls six short of his first ODI ton. What an innings though by him. He has done the job he was sent out for. His 163-run stand with Hope has taken his team almost over the line. A round of applause as he walks back. Afghanistan finally have something to be happy out. Mujeeb bowls a short one on off, it stays a touch low. Chase looks to bring his ton up with a hit as he tries to pull this. Misses and the ball clips the off pole. For a second, Chase waits as he must have felt the bails would have come off of the gloves of the keeper but that is not the case. He needs to walk back.

Drinks break! After losing two quick wickets, Shai Hope along with Roston Chase have added 50 runs between them and are looking solid out in the middle. Afghanistan need to tighten the grip if they are to defend this low score. Skipper Rashid will hold the key for them. We will have to wait and see how Hope and Chase respond this mini-break. Will they be able to continue or will the Afghans strike post the break to pull things back? Interesting times ahead.

We are back for the chase. Evin Lewis and Shai Hope will open the batting for West Indies. Mujeeb Ur Rahman will start the proceedings for Afghanistan.
So, with a lot of purchase on the pitch for the spinners, the target looks confusing as Afghanistan possess the likes of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. But one good partnership is all West Indies need. Will they have to work hard to get to the target or will it be done easily? Stay tuned to find out!
Talking about the Windies bowling, it was a very good performance. Jason Holder and Roston Chase were the pick of them as both grabbed a couple of wickets and did not bowl any loose deliveries. Both the debutants also got wickets and it was a good outing for them. Alzarri Joseph was the only one who had a bad day as he was hit all over the park. However, when majority of the bowlers who bowled for you on that day do well, then you probably have done a decent job with the ball as a team.
The innings started on a poor note for Afghanistan as they lost both their openers even before crossing the 20-run mark. Ikram and Rahmat Shah though took Windies on top with a 100-plus stand with both scoring fifties. However, the stand was broken as Ikram was bizarrely run out. That was a crucial point in the innings and turned the match around as after that, Afghanistan lost all momentum. They lost 4 wickets within 32 runs. Afghan played a fighting knock but no one else was able to support him as Afghanistan were bowled out on 194.
A top bowling effort from the Windies sees them well on top at the moment. Their bowlers have justified their skipper's decision of bowling first, it is now onto the batters to do the rest.

RUN OUT! What a brilliant piece of fielding from Jason Holder. What an effort and they get the massive massive wicket of Afghan. A flighted fuller ball on off, Afghan looks to drive but gets a thick outside edge which goes to Holder at first slip on the bounce to his right. He gets down in time and then throws the ball on the stumps at the striker's end. Afghan thought that the ball would go past Holder because of the thick edge but that was not the case. OUT! RUN OUT! What happened suddenly? This is unfortunate for Ali Khil as he has to depart. A very crucial moment in this game. He was well-set but he will have to walk back to the pavilion now. Chase floats a ball on middle and leg, Shah flicks this one towards deep mid-wicket for a single. The batters complete the single and Ali Khil walks out of his crease to congratulate Shah on his half ton. All of a sudden, West Indies appeal for a run out and the square leg umpire takes it upstairs. Okay then, this is crazy and unfortunate at the same time. The replays show that after completing the single, Ikram waits for the throw to come and even planted his bat in to make way for the ball to go to the keeper. He then leaves to congratulate his partner and this is when the keeper broke the stumps. All of that happened in a flash. The ball became dead as far as Ikram thinks but for the keeper, the whole process got completed when he broke the stumps. Slightly debatable decision. Ikram wasn't attempting for a run, to be honest. But then, as per the rules you have to wait till the ball becomes dead for all. A bizarre way to get dismissed. 50 up for Shah but his celebration is spoiled by this incident. This dismissal takes our memory to the 2006 Test match involving New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Christchurch. In a similar incident, after grounding his bat to complete the run, Muralitharan turned back to congratulate Sangakkara for his fabulous century. But the ball had not been ruled dead and Brendon McCullum, the wicketkeeper, whipped the bails off. Then, it was a big controversy where Mahela Jayawardene felt it was not in keeping with the true spirit of the competition and Stephen Fleming said that they played by the rule. You won't hear much uproar here because it's a very low-keyed contest and Ikram Ali Khil isn't of the same stature as Muttiah Muralitharan.
What has happened here? A run out there? It will be a very unlucky dismissal if that happens. And, yes, Ikram is run out. It seemed like he was going to congratulate Shah after completing the single.

Alistair Campbell is down for the Pitch Report. The ODIs will be played on the red soil. There is a bit of grass and a tinge of green as well. It will be interesting to see what the teams will choose to do first because in the warm up game the team batting first lost. The ground is big and running between the wickets will be the key. Hitting boundaries will be tough out here.
Mohammad Nabi is down for an interview. He says that these are totally different conditions and a new ground where not many ODIs have been played. Says that the Afghanistan team have been here since the last week and have had a brilliant time. Adds that they had a brilliant warm up game as well. When asked about their newly appointed head coach, Lance Klusener, Nabi says he is happy with the coach and they are working out the different team combinations for different formats.
TOSS - West Indies have won the Toss and they have asked Afghanistan to bat first.
It is almost time then. The no. 9 and no. 10 ranked sides are taking on each other. West Indies were blanked by India at home, in the three formats. Afghanistan, on the other hand, are coming from an impressive T20I tri-series involving Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. The spin-heavy side will look to take on the power-hitters of the opposition while the pace-battery of West Indies will be looking to punish the Afghanistan batters. One can term this affair as Afghan bowlers versus the West Indian batting but both the sides will be eager to perform in all the formats and start the series with a victory. Let us see what unfolds. Stay with us for the Toss update and Pitch Report.
