Hobart Hurricanes beat Adelaide Strikers by 10 runs

Melbourne Stars - 1. Sydney Sixers - 2. Adelaide Strikers - 3. One game left in the league stage. If Brisbane Heat win, or even manage to get a point, should their game be washed out, they will be fourth and Sydney Thunder will be 5th. If the Heat lose, the Thunder will be 4th and Hurricanes 5th. Join us on Monday, 27h January 2020, at the Docklands Stadium, Melbourne to witness a clash between the Melbourne Renegades and Brisbane Heat. The game begins at 2.45 pm local (0345 GMT). ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Okay! What has this game done to the table? KNOCKED OUT THE PERTH SCORCHERS. Ensured that Sydney Sixers retain their second spot, which means, Qualifier 1 will be played between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers at the MCG. Hobart Hurricanes have won here but they will be following the Heat-Renegades match closely on Monday. For now, it looks like a bottom of the table clash - but a win for the Heat will knock the Hurricanes out as they are below Thunder in the table.
VICTORIOUS HOBART HURRICANES SKIPPER, MATTHEW WADE, HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. Says that he is feeling stressed out after such a close match, especially being a captain. Honestly admits that when 27 were needed in 2 overs, he felt this one was going away from the Hurricanes but is thankful to his luck that his team won. Is proud of his boys and says that the last 4-5 games, the mindset was to just try and win every match but without taking too much pressure. On missing out on a home final, Wade says that this ground is more suited to them but they have got to adjust to wherever they get to play.
Nearly let this one slip, the Hurricanes, didn't they? The likes of Faulkner, Ellis and Boland went for runs but they picked up wickets at crucial intervals. Boland broke the Head-Salt stand while Faulkner got the big wicket of Carey in the 19th over. Ellis, well, is fast making a case for himself as a go-to death bowler. His accolades against the Renegades has not been forgotten yet while here, he bowled a superb couple of overs to take his side home.
The Strikers lost Jake Weatherald early but the Salt-Head stand revived the innings. Their stand of 79 in 47 balls transferred the pressure back onto the Hurricanes and even when it was broken, Carey's and Wells' cameos kept the Blues in the hunt. However, the latter's wicket turned the tide. Jonathan Wells was dismissed in the 17th over, to Clive Rose and at that stage, 48 were needed in 23 balls. The Strikers could not quite recover after that.
Phew. Australia Day lives up to its name of pulling up surprises and exciting matches. First, the Scorchers-Thunder contest. And now, this high-scoring encounter. When Matthew Wade smashed the record books with a stunning century, one would have thought 217 is enough. But it almost proved short.
How would you feel if you scored a blitzkrieg century, pummeled the life out of the opposition and took the score post 200? You should be winning, right? By that, justification was done to the Hurricanes and Matthew Wade. But we were not far from witnessing a second century going down the drain in the span of two days.

OUT! LBW! Now, the game is dead. A length ball, just outside off, coming in with the angle, Neser gets across and looks to tuck but misses and is hit on the pads. Ellis appeals and the finger goes up!

OUT! A very unlikely run out! Full and outside off, Neser swings hard but the ball takes the inside edge and goes past the off stump and the diving keeper towards fine leg. The batsmen take two and Scott Boland comes across gingerly to field the ball from fine leg. Seeing that, Short calls Neser for the third. The throw comes in to the keeper and Short has to dive in. McDermott appeals and it is referred upstairs. Replays show that Matthew is short. 19 needed from 4 now.
Is that out? A run out appeal has been referred upstairs. Dear me... this is gone!

The batsman gets a bottom edge on that one. One run added to the total.

Safe. A short ball, Neser pulls it to mid-wicket and takes the single. The fielder takes it easy and returns a lazy and slow throw to the keeper. Seeing that, Neser charges back for the second and dives back in as Wade disturbs the stumps. The run out appeal is referred upstairs but replays show that the bat came in, then bounced in the air. That is not out, as per the new rules.
Run out appeal! No celebration going on. Seems like Neser is home. Referred upstairs. Yes, he is.

The batsman dances down the track. The batsmen have run through for a single.
Michael Neser walks in at number 8, replacing Carey.

OUT! That is what pressure does to you. Carey departs and looks like he cannot carry his team to Qualifier 1. Full and outside off, Alex looks to just chip it over mid off and get perhaps a single or two to long off. But his timing is exquisite and the ball carries to the fielder! Sometimes, being a good timer of the ball becomes a curse. 27 needed from 10 now.

OUT! Gone. Dead plumb LBW. Once again, Rashid lines himself up for the slog but Ellis holds his nerve and fires this very full and straight. Khan initially looks to swing but then realizes that the length is not ideal for that. Tries to jab it down and does so. Or does he? Because Ellis appeals and the umpire raises his finger! Here come the replays - actually, the bat has come down but hit the pad! And the ball has hit the pad right in front of the sticks. Rashid does not want to go but you have gotta go, mate. 33 needed from 16.

OUT! BOWLED! Is that the game for the Hurricanes? Travis Head is gone and he is gone in a really bizarre manner. Very full, around off, Head clears his front leg and looks to go big. FOUR! Adelaide is underway in style! A short ball on the body, it is pulled behind square on the leg side and it races away to the fence.
We are back for the chase! The Adelaide openers, Philip Salt and Jake Weatherald make their way out to the middle. They are followed by the Hobart players. James Faulkner has the new ball in hand. Here we go...
Now then, the target is a huge one! Adelaide do have a strong batting line-up but they will need to bat out of their skin to chase this down. Hobart on the other hand will back themselves to defend it. Can they do so? We will find out in a while.
The Adelaide bowling is something they would want to forget. All the bowlers took a pounding. Even Rashid Khan was taken to the cleaners. Neser was probably the pick as he not only got a wicket but had a decent economy rate too.
WOW! Just wow! Matthew Wade, just take a bow! He walks off to a standing ovation and rightly so. What entertainment has that guy provided. Amazing stuff. A carnage and just the two batters responsible for it. Actually, just the one as Short one played at a strike rate of around 130, now why do I write only? Because his partner was striking at above 200. Right from the word go, they went after the bowlers, they stitched a massive 203-run stand with Short scoring a ton and Short just above 70. The two have delivered in a must-win game for the visitors.

All set for this mouth-watering clash as the Strikers spread themselves onto the field. D'Arcy Short and Matthew Wade walk out with their weapons of mass destruction. This is interesting. Travis Head to bowl the opening over! Wade to face. Here we go...
Adelaide Strikers (UNCHANGED Playing XI) - Philip Salt, Jake Weatherald, Travis Head(C), Alex Carey(WK), Jonathan Wells, Matthew Short, Michael Neser, Rashid Khan, Peter Siddle, Wes Agar and Billy Stanlake.
Hobart Hurricanes (UNCHANGED Playing XI) - D'Arcy Short, Matthew Wade(C), Macalister Wright, David Miller, Ben McDermott(WK), George Bailey, James Faulkner, Clive Rose, Nathan Ellis, Qais Ahmad and Scott Boland.
BAT FLIP - The flip of the bat has gone Matthew Wade's way. HOBART HURRICANES ELECT TO BAT FIRST.
We talked about the Thunder and the Scorchers. What about the Strikers and the Hurricanes? Hobart of course, need to win to stay alive in the competition but the Blues have their own motive to win as well. A victory takes them to number 2, above the Sydney Sixers, due to a superior net run rate. So as you see, plenty to play for, for both teams!
Recovered? Back from the previous humdinger? Well, the Thunder nearly found a way to lose, didn't they? But they are safe for now. Both they and the Scorchers look at this particular game with keen interest, lending all their support to Adelaide Strikers. Hello and a warm welcome to game number 55 of BBL 09, between Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes at the Adelaide Oval. The celebrations planned for Australia Day seem to be executed well.
