At Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, on Wednesday, March 27, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Mumbai Indians by 31 runs in Match 8, earning their first victory of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024). Following their first-ball innings, SRH smashed all previous records with their batting performance, amassing 277/3, the greatest total in league history.
Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen (80* off 34) all hit half-centuries in the hosts’ record-breaking innings. In response, MI had a chance midway through the phase but lost it due to some excellent bowling from SRH thereafter. With Tilak Varma top-scoring with 64 (34), they were only able to reach 246/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Allow us to examine the game’s highlights:
1. Travis offers an early warning
After seven years in the IPL, the SRH opener launched himself offensively against the MI bowlers as soon as play began. Slashing the opponent in all areas of the ground, the southpaw made full use of the fielding limitations. Nine fours and three sixes helped Head reach his fifty in just 17 balls, and he went on to score 62 (24) overall.

2. Abhishek Sharma becomes the first SRH batter to reach fifty in history.
After Mayank Agarwal was removed early in the fifth over, the 23-year-old came in to bat. Head was in commanding form at the other end, and Sharma came out in full swing to join him at the crease. As both players began an assault from their respective ends, the youthful player provided strong support to the Australian opener. Sharma reached his fifty runs in just sixteen balls and then smashed seven sixes and three fours to score 63 (23).

3. In a high-scoring match, Pat Cummins bowls a cost-effective spell
The skipper of the SRH, with figures of 2/35 in four overs, was the most impressive bowler from both sides. After the MI opener misplayed a pull ball that fell straight to Abhishek Sharma at fine leg in the fifth over, Cummins removed Rohit Sharma (26 off 12). In the fifteenth over, he managed to get the well-positioned Tilak Varma trapped to deep mid-wicket, conceding just three runs. In the penultimate over of the innings, Cummins let up just seven runs more to secure victory for his team.
