Cameron Green is ready to return to international cricket with the crucial World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa, which begins on Wednesday, June 11, at the renowned Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

The star all-rounder suffered a back ailment in last year’s white-ball series against Pakistan, which preceded the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 26-year-old underwent surgery but has since regained his fitness and rejoined Australia’s red-ball squad. However, he is likely to play only as a specialist batter.

Green recently revealed that he was inspired by Jasprit Bumrah’s incredible comeback following back surgery. After undergoing surgery in March 2023, Bumrah has accomplished some remarkable exploits in international cricket. He was named Player of the Tournament for India’s winning 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. The Indian seamer also earned Player of the Series after taking 32 wickets in five Border-Gavaskar Tests.

“That is very special. And makes you feel much better about it. I didn’t play with him in Mumbai, but that was how we connected. I spent some time with him there. To have someone like him reach out, and then to watch him over the summer and realise how good he is obviously post-surgery, gave me a lot of confidence,” Green said before of the WTC final.

I have always tried to find a silver lining in an accident. Cameron Green

Green stated that the injury allowed him to spend time with his family, but he also admitted that it was difficult for him to see his teammates play while he was out.

“I’ve always tried to see the bright side of an accident. I believe we spend a lot of time at the cricket ground and very little at home. So the silver lining was probably some time at home. To recharge and reconnect with those people I wouldn’t have time to meet otherwise. Reconnect with relatives. Spend some time at the gym to improve my physical condition. Have a good think about my batting and bowling. “How can I improve there without actually doing it?” Green asked.

“When I was hurt, there were undoubtedly mixed emotions. The fact that you are missing Test cricket is the most painful part for you. Watching the lads play was difficult at times. But at the same time, I knew I was going home to take 5-6 months off, which I really needed,” he said.

Green returned to competitive cricket in April, representing Gloucestershire on the County circuit. During his stint, the brilliant cricketer scored three hundreds. He has played 28 Tests for Australia, totalling 1377 runs and 35 wickets.
