Dean Elgar, who resigned from Test cricket after the India series, said Virat Kohli spit at him on his maiden tour to India. Dean Elgar made his maiden Test visit to Asia in 2015, the year Virat Kohli became Indian Test team captain.
The southpaw said he struggled against Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja after Kohli spit on him. The former opening batter responded quickly and threatened to beat the then-Indian captain with his bat.
My first India-Kohli encounter Like playing on that ground, those wickets were jokes. I batted and held my own against Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kohli, who spat at me. Dean Elgar said on the Banter with the Boys podcast, “If you do that, I’ll **** you with this bat.”
The podcast host questioned Dean Elgar if Kohli understood South African terminology, and he said AB de Villiers told him while they played for RCB.
Yes, he did, since de Villiers was his RCB colleague and understood. I said I’d **** on this field and knock you out if you do that. He then barked up the wrong tree by saying, ‘Hey, **** you, **** you’ (impersonating Kohli). We’re in India, so be careful, he said.

Kohli apologized to AB de Villiers.
Dean Elgar said AB de Villiers addressed Kohli after learning about the incident. Three years later, when India toured South Africa in 2018, the former India captain called to apologize and make up over a drink.
“De Villiers realized what he done and demanded, ‘Why are you spitting at my teammate?’ In South Africa two years later, he called to offer to drink with me after the series. He wanted to apologize. We drank until 3 and there was my first chance to meet Kohli, “Elgar concluded.
In the first Test of his last Test series against India in Centurion, Elgar scored 185 (287), helping South Africa win by 32 runs. After his last dismissal in the second Test, Kohli hugged Elgar and wished him well in his post-cricket career.
Mutual respect takes center stage as #TeamIndia players bid a fitting farewell to the South African captain! 👏🏻🙌🏻
