On December 19, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, the IPL 2024 auction was successfully held. As many teenage cricket players were sold for enormous sums of money at the bidding event, their ambitions of participating in the world’s largest T20 league were fulfilled. Sumit Kumar, the wicketkeeper batsman for Jharkhand, was one such player. He was originally valued at INR 20 lakh, but the Delhi Capitals purchased him for INR 1 crore.
When Sumit Kumar mother told him the wonderful news over the phone, she broke down in tears, seeing her son fulfill his ambition of playing with some of the biggest names in international cricket. The happy reunion was short-lived, though, as Sumit Kumar later learned that the Delhi Capitals had sent him a picture of another Haryana cricket player sharing his name in order to congratulate him.
It was therefore necessary for the wicketkeeper hitter to tell his distraught mother about the error.
“My mom was overjoyed. She never stopped praying for me. But how is this even possible? Yes, the names can be the same, but what about the image that briefly appeared on TV? Sumit Kumar told the Times of India about his ordeal: “My name and photo were there.”
Sumit Kumar went on to say that during the bidding, the auction announcer even displayed his portrait.
“I couldn’t bring my mother comfort. She was quite sentimental. She was overjoyed to see my name and picture on the TV before this startling event occurred. The Delhi Capitals are a large squad. It surprised me that they were acting like cricket players. He continued, “My family and I felt too horrible about it.
He added that DC’s Instagram account had also posted a congratulations to him, but it had been removed a few hours later.
“They also posted my photo to their Instagram account. They looked out for me. They also tagged me. I was completely confident when I received the notification. But I was astonished and perplexed when they removed it after a few hours,” he remarked.
