The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel unveiled the 15-person team for the five-match T20I series against India on Tuesday, August 1. Notably, the two teams will compete in a T20I series that is scheduled to begin on Thursday, August 3, at Trinidad’s Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
The 15-member preliminary squad will travel for all five games, and a 13-member squad will be chosen for each game from which the final starting XI will be chosen. Notable additions to the lineup include wicketkeeper-batsman Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, and Oshane Thomas. In addition, the selection committee went on to say that the roster was chosen with the T20 World Cup in 2024 in mind.
“The upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is considered when choosing the squad. In an effort to find the best combinations, we are looking at several plans. Dr. Desmond Haynes, Lead Selector of CWI, was quoted by ‘Windiescricket’ as saying, “As we prepare, we are looking to establish a unit that we believe can do the job when we host the world event in just under a year.
We have some match-winners in our lineup, and we’ll work to prepare properly, starting Thursday here in Trinidad. In addition, we have other players who may be taken into account moving forward, as the Caribbean Premier League begins the following month, he said.
For the five-match series, Rovman Powell will serve as the team’s captain, and Kyle Mayers will serve as Powell’s assistant. The second and third Twenty20 Internationals between the two teams will be played in Providence, Guyana, while the fifth and final Twenty20 International will be played in Lauderhill, Florida.
The West Indies team for the T20I series against India includes Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Obed McCoy, Nicholas Pooran, Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith, and Oshane Thomas, in addition to captain Rovman Powell.
