R Sridhar, a former fielding coach for India, supports Shubman Gill to take Rohit Sharma’s place as captain going forward. Following the 2024 T20 World Cup, the young player captained India against Zimbabwe, leading the Men in Blue to a 4-1 victory in the five-match T20I series. Shortly after, Suryakumar Yadav was chosen the new T20I captain and he was selected the team’s vice-captain for white-ball cricket by the selectors.
The process to determine if Gill is qualified to lead India following the 2027 ODI World Cup has started, according to Sridhar. The 54-year-old also spoke briefly about Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has recently made headlines for India. In the five-match Test series against England and, more recently, in the Twenty20 International series against Zimbabwe, the young player was outstanding.
According to their current performance and their potential from the India-England Test series and even the ODI matches, I believe these two are dominating the T20I and Test formats. I consider Shubman Gill to be an all-around player, and I believe that in Test and One-Day International matches, he would be Rohit Sharma’s pupil. After the 2027 World Cup, in all formats, I’m confident that India would view him as the captain,” Sridhar told Hindustan Times.
Gill is reportedly regarded as a leader in Test cricket as well. Prior to the rescheduled Test match against England in 2022, Jasprit Bumrah was named vice-captain and led the squad. Gill’s cause might be advanced, though, as the team administration and selections want to give his workload management top priority. When the BCCI releases the roster for the forthcoming series against Bangladesh, further information is anticipated.
