In an emotional narrative about how his 18-month-old son Albie was able to spend time with his mother before she passed away in March, Pat Cummins has opened up about the passing of his mother. Midway through Australia’s tour of India, Cummins flew back home to be with his mother, who was battling a protracted case of breast cancer.
Steve Smith led Australia in the final two Tests against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in early 2023, in place of Pat Cummins. The 30-year-old also skipped the three-game One-Day International (ODI) series against India since he tragically lost his mother.
Cummins was requested to add something meaningful during an interview with former England soccer great Rio Ferdinand for the social media platform WeAre8. He claimed that since he did not have a strong sense of sentiment, he had to decide which items in the house were most important to him. He then read a story from a cardboard children’s book. He claimed that his son had a particular bond with the book “Birds,” which his mother had read to him just before she passed away.
I had to consider what items in the house were significant to me because I’m not a very sentimental person.
I brought a book for kids. Albie, my son, is 18 months old. It is his preferred children’s book. It’s from England and is titled Birds, so hopefully you’ll recognize a couple of the songs. He adores this book to the hilt. It is taken from the bookshelves by him.
This book is especially meaningful to me because it was the last thing my mother read to him before she passed away. There is a strong bond that unites us all because my wife [Beckie] bought it, Cummins remarked.
The kind of person you want to be really hits home: Cummins
Cummins continued by claiming that he was still in shock. He also expressed his thanks for the chance he had in the previous few months to spend so much time with his mother, kids, and father. He also asserted that one’s home constantly molds them into the person they desire to be.
“I come from a large family; I’m one of five children. Even though it’s still fairly fresh right now, I’ve been fortunate enough to spend a lot of time recently with my mother, our family, and my dad, simply sharing those memories.
It definitely resonates with you in terms of the type of person and father you want to be. in that direction. However, I’ll keep talking to people and working through my pain, he continued.
