“The Pat Cummins-led team didn’t get off to a good start as Mitchell Marsh was bowled by Mohammed Shami in the opening over alone, giving Australia an early disadvantage. On Friday, September 22 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, the first of the three ODIs between India and Australia will take place. Australia was invited to open the batting on a decent batting surface by Indian skipper KL Rahul after winning the toss.
To consolidate the batting following the early setback, David Warner (52 off 53) and Steve Smith (41 off 60) put together a 94-run stand for the second wicket. Ravindra Jadeja ultimately ended the partnership when he caught David Warner at deep mid-wicket for a dismissal.
Smith’s stumps were destroyed by Shami as he rejoined the attack, dealing Australia a third blow. The right-arm seamer struck the Australian batter with a gorgeous inswinger that nipped back into him and struck him in the stumps.
A strange dismissal was seen later in the innings when Marnus Labuschagne was out stumped. In an attempt to reverse sweep Ravichandran Ashwin, the Australian batter received an edge, but India wicketkeeper KL Rahul was unable to catch the ball as it hit his pads and ricocheted onto the stumps. When the ball made contact with the stumps, Labuschagne was deemed short of the crease and was ruled to be stumped, much to his dismay. Notably, it was also Ashwin’s first wicket following a 21-month absence from ODI play.
Mohammed Shami posts his best ODI statistics.
At 248/5 after 46.4 overs, Australia was hoping for a strong finish, but Shami, who claimed the second five-wicket haul of his career, destroyed their hopes. The 33-year-old dismissed Australia for 276 after finishing his spell with his best-ever figures of 5/51 in ten overs.
Along with Shami, other wickets included Jasprit Bumrah (1/43), Ravichandran Ashwin (1/47), and Ravindra Jadeja (1/51). Ruturaj Gaikwad (33* off 39) and Shubman Gill (33* off 27) were at the crease as India reached 68/0 after 11 overs, showing that they were off to a strong start in the chase.
