Through the unusual direct nomination procedure of the WBBL, the Melbourne Stars have formally announced the signing of England’s promising batter, Sophia Dunkley.
Sophia Dunkley is one of six cricketers who decided against taking part in the foreign draft and instead committed to the competition.
The WBBL added a distinctive nomination clause for international players, unlike the men’s BBL draft. Bypassing the draft, this provision enables players to nominate themselves directly for a WBBL club.
This was primarily created for players who were unsure of their draft prospects or potential destinations. This alternative, however, came at a cost because the players would only be qualified for 95% of the silver category salary, or AU$61,750.
This path was chosen by Sophia Dunkley, Tammy Beaumont, Amy Jones, Mignon du Preez, Lizelle Lee, and Suzie Bates. As a result, the third round of the WBBL draft was fairly subdued, with seven out of eight clubs opting not to use their third pick. The Sydney Thunder stood out as an exception, taking advantage of the chance and selecting three players.
Dunkley will join the Melbourne Stars and play for them under the direction of English coach Jonathan Batty. Together with English-speaking teammates like Alice Capsey and Maia Bouchier, she strengthens the team.
Although Dunkley’s deal has been verified, there has been no official announcement on the other five players. Lizelle Lee is anticipated to rejoin the Hobart Hurricanes, while Suzie Bates appears set to rejoin the Sydney Sixers.
Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones are reportedly in talks with the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers, respectively, while Mignon du Preez has been linked to the Brisbane Heat.
With its creative strategies, the WBBL continues to astound cricket fans, and Sophia Dunkley’s straight nomination to the Melbourne Stars is yet another intriguing advancement in women’s Big Bash cricket. These recent additions of prominent players will undoubtedly energize and inspire the competition as we all excitedly anticipate the forthcoming season.
