In 2008, Manoj Tiwary made his international debut for India against Australia at Brisbane’s Gabba. He spent many years with the Indian team, but injuries and a lack of opportunities both hindered his development. His best performance came in a match against the West Indies in Chennai in 2011, when he batted brilliantly for 104 runs after entering the crease with the score at 1/2 in the first over. The fact that he played through cramping made his innings all the more impressive. Curiously, following his match-winning performance, Tiwary was benched for the following 14 games.
The Bengal batsman last year drove his state team to the Ranji Trophy finals. Many people thought Manoj’s ultimate strike came when Bengal lost the championship game against Saurashtra. The right-handed hitter, however, chose not to call it quits straight away and instead announced his retirement from cricket on Thursday, August 3, via his social media accounts. He is 37 years old.
