Man of the Match
Alex Hales
Commentry
That is all we have for you from this game. The Strikers-Hurricanes game starts in an hour from now. Please do switch to that tab to see whether the final 5 teams are confirmed for the playoffs.
So the revised points table sees the Thunder jump to fourth, with 13 points. They would first be keenly looking at the Hobart-Adelaide match. If Adelaide win or lose by a narrow margin, the Thunder need not even bother about Monday. However, if the Hurricanes win by a big margin, some nail-chatting would be there when the Renegades play the Heat in the final league game.
ALES HALES HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. He is happy with the win. Says that it has been a really enjoyable BBL for him and he personally, could contribute. On Chris Morris finishing things off, Hales admits that he was out of touch but this innings here would give him a lot of confidence. On Thunder's chances for the playoffs, Hales says that if both Hobart and Renegades win they should be through. Stresses that they have done what they could and can only hope for the best now.
Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method is usually stern on the side batting first. Here it was no different. On a sluggish pitch, Perth might have scraped to 150 and even defended it - but the rain just spiced up the pitch and on the new deck, 8 an over was not too big a deal. Jhye Richardson and Fawad Ahmed still, tried their best and got some choke going but the second over from Morne Morkel, which went for 18, allowed the Thunder to get a headstart.
A bit too close for comfort but the Thunder are through. 96 was originally thought to be a tough total to chase in 12 overs on a slow deck but the quickfire 66-run opening stand in 45 balls set the tone for the chase. Hales' cameo ensured that the win was secured - that is what we all thought - but suddenly, Perth came back into the game as the Thunder found ways to collapse. Eventually, Chris Morris took them home.

OUT! Khawaja is just short! Both the openers back in the hut. Perth now do have a sniff here. Agar bowls it outside off, Khawaj looks to guide it down to third man but gets a bottom edge which hits the boot of the keeper. Khawaja is not sure where the ball exactly is so he sets off. He then realizes it is near the keeper so tries to get back in. Inglis picks the ball up, whips the bails off and appeals. The umpire takes it upstairs. Replays roll in and show that Khawaja has to take the long walk back. 22 needed in 19. Two new batters out there.

We are back for the second essay! The Sun is shining now and out come the Perth players. They have to defend 95 in 12 overs to ensure their spot in the playoffs. Can they do so? We will find out as the two openers, Usman Khawaja and Alex Hales make their way out to the middle. The left-hander will be on strike and he will be facing Jhye Richardson. Here we go...
4.40 pm local (0540 GMT) - Great news! Scratch the previous update. The rain has stopped and we are looking at a 4.55 pm resumption! One thing is confirmed - the first innings is done. Awaiting the DLS target for the Thunder.
4.30 pm local (0530 GMT) - We are hearing that the rain has still not stopped but the Perth innings perhaps has come to a close, with play needing to resume by 4.40 pm local. So, Thunder's targets will be adjusted as per the DLS. The players need to get on the field by 5.23 pm for the game to have a result. Fingers crossed.
3.55 pm local (0455 GMT) - Oh dear... the players are now coming off the field. The drizzle was getting heavier and the umpire tried their best to stay for as long as they could. Curiously though, it does not look too heavy. There is some wind around as well, so hopefully, this will be blown away soon. Only the main square is covered, so that is an encouraging sign.

OUT! TIMBER! That is an excellent reply from Morris. A corner of a yorker from Morris to get rid of Inglis. CM is pumped up. It is at the base of the off pole. Inglis fails to get his bat down in time and is cleaned up. Good wicket as Inglis was looking good out there. This is a good start for the hosts.

FOUR! Excellent batting from Inglis! He is really taking the pressure of Liam who is not timing it that well. Another boundary from him. He brings out the paddle scoop again. Morris bowls it a touch outside off. Inglis manages to get bat on ball and it goes over the fielder at short fine leg and into the fence.

Slightly shorter and around off, it seems to have stuck in the wicket. Livingstone initially lined-up to pull it but then due to the lack of pace, keeps it out.

Perth are off the mark! This is flatter and on middle, Inglis looks to drive it with a straight bat but it goes off the inner half through mid-wicket for one.
We are all set for the action to begin! The Thunder players make their way out to the middle. They are followed by the Perth openers, Liam Livingstone and Josh Inglis. A spinner to begin with for the hosts, it is Jonathan Cook who will start the proceedings. Here we go...
Sydney Thunder (Playing XI) - Usman Khawaja, Alex Hales, Callum Ferguson(C), Alex Ross, Arjun Nair, Daniel Sams, Jay Lenton(WK), Chris Morris, Chris Tremain (IN FOR LIAM BOWE), Jonathan Cook and Gurinder Sandhu.
Perth Scorchers (Playing XI) - Liam Livingstone, Josh Inglis(WK), Mitchell Marsh(C), Cameron Bancroft, Ashton Turner, Tim David (IN FOR KURTIS PATTERSON), Ashton Agar, Jhye Richardson, Matthew Kelly, Morne Morkel (IN FOR CHRIS JORDAN) and Fawad Ahmed.
BAT FLIP - Mitchell Marsh has won the flip of the bat and PERTH SCORCHERS WILL BAT FIRST.
Coming to the Thunder, it is the other way around. A loss would certainly see them knocked out. But a win does not guarantee them a spot in the playoffs either! Too many mathematics. Never impressed my math professor in school or college, so will not try to confuse or impress you either. Let the game unfold and let the situation take care of itself.
The best thing for the Scorchers is that their destiny is in their own hands. Win here and make it through to the playoffs. A loss though, may not necessarily rule them out. They will then have to hope that both Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat lose their final fixtures.
It is Australia day and also the penultimate day of the league stage! With no international cricket around here, nothing better than celebrating it with a multiple dose of T20 cricket. Super Sunday sees games 54 and 55 and the first of those will witness the clash between Sydney Thunder and the Perth Scorchers at the Sydney Showground Stadium. Hello and a warm welcome!
