Man of the Match
Jonathan Cook
Commentry
So that is it from this game. Hobart Hurricanes are out of BBL 09 and Sydney Thunder will now face Adelaide Strikers for the Knockout. But before that Melbourne Stars welcome Sydney Sixers for the Qualifier. Expect it to be a cracker of a contest. Join us for that game on Friday, 31st January. The match will begin at 1915 local (0815 GMT). Join us for that one. Till then, take care!
For his match-winning bowling performance on a very difficult bowling pitch, Jonathan Cook has been awarded the Man of the Match. Cook says that he is really happy with his performance, especially as it has come at the crucial stage of the tournament. Tells Hales and Usman gave them a very good start and says he is hopeful that he can continue. Feels that Adelaide is a daunting place to go as it is a fortress for the Strikers and hopes to repeat what they did on New Years Eve.
A brilliant bowling performance from the Sydney Thunder. They were shining the brightest throughout the day and backed up a superb batting with the ball as well. Everyone bowled well barring Nair who was expensive. The star with the ball was Jonathan Cook who was just unplayable and scalped 4 wickets and gave away just 21. Morris was exceptional as well and scalped three. Overall it was a thorough bowling performance.
Chasing a massive score of 198, the wheels of Hurricanes' wheels started to come off as soon as they lost Wade and D'Arcy Short just outside the Powerplay. Bailey's swansong was not a successful one as even he could not do much. The run rate kept on creeping up and Hobart Hurricanes kept losing wickets and all-in-all it was a miserable day in the office for them.
An easy win for the Sydney Thunder and they breeze into the Knockouts with a comprehensive 57-run win and book their flight to Adelaide as the Strikers await them in the Knockout! George Bailey's awesome career comes to an end and now he takes over the mantle as Australia's selector. Unfortunately he cannot bow out with a trophy but he has been a great servant of the game and we all will miss his smile and unorthodox style of play.

We are back for the run chase. Matthew Wade and D'Arcy Short walk out to the middle. The Thunder players are already out in the middle. Arjun Nair to bowl for the Thunder. Here we go...
So Hobart Hurricanes need 197 to stay alive in this competition. Sydney Thunder have the score, now the onus will be on the bowlers to do the job and take the side into the Knockout. We are in for a tasty chase. Join us in a while to find out.
Hobart Hurricanes might be happy with the way they managed to drag things back after getting the initial hammering. It looked like they would be chasing a score in excess of 210 in the first half of the innings but they dragged things back in the second half and restricted them under 200. Ellis was the real star of the show. In a game where every other bowler went over 9 rpo, he was superb and gave away just 18 runs and it was his overs that put the brakes on Thunder's lightening scoring. Along with him Rose, Faulkner and Boland picked up a wicket each but they all were expensive.
What a batting display from the Thunder. The opening pair of Hales and Khawaja justified their skipper's decision to bat first and their blistering start along with late cameos from Ferguson, Ross, Morris have propelled them to a huge total of 196. Though the pitch looks fantastic to bat on, they might have a match winning score as it is not easy to chase in a pressure game like an Eliminator.

Clive Rose 39/1(3)
16.6
W
OUT! Caught! Hurricanes dragging things back and putting brakes on the run flow by picking up wickets. A lucky wicket for Rose. This game is harsh on the bowlers and they need some luck and Rose has got his share of the cake. He bowls a full toss on middle and off, Ferguson looks to smash it over the square leg fence but the Thunder skipper cannot get under it and ends up hitting it straight to the man at deep square leg. D'Arcy Short stationed there takes an easy catch.
16.5
.
Darted on the pads, Ferguson looks to flick but misses. The ball hits him on the pads and there is a stifled appeal but the umpire turns it down.

Tossed up on off, Alex plays it towards cover and gets a single.

WIDE! Too wide outside off, on the wrong side of the tramline and it has been wided.

SIX! Smoked away! Bad ball from Rose. It is full and right under the bat of Ross. He smashes it over the cow corner region for a biggie.
16.2

FOUR! Very well played reverse sweep from Ross. It is short and on middle and leg from Rose. Ross premeditates the reverse sweep and hits it with power through point for a boundary.

Oh! Flatter outside off, Ross looks to sweep but misses. The ball was just away from finding the edge and also the stumps.

In the air... but lands short of Short. Length ball on middle, Ferguson flicks it uppishly towards long on. Short there comes forward but he cannot get to the ball. However, he does really well to put his body in the line to save boundary. A couple of runs taken.
15.5
1
Direct hit and Ross would've been a goner! A flatter one on the pads, Ross pushes it to the right side of the bowler and takes off, Ahmad quickly gets to the ball, picks it up and fires the throw at the non-striker's end but misses.
15.4
.
NOT OUT! A slower loopy ball from Ahmad, Ross looks to loft it over mid on but is beaten. The keeper behind the wicket whips the bails off quickly and appeals. The third umpire has been called for and the replays roll in to confirm that Ross never went out of the crease.
Stumping appeal taken upstairs. Looks safe.

End of a very good over from Boland. After going for 35 from his first 3. He finishes with a superb over. Just 4 off his last and also the big wicket of Alex Hales. The last ball is on a length and slower. Ross is early in playing that but manages to guide it to cover and get a single.
14.5
1
Fuller outside off, Ferguson strokes it through covers for one.
Alex Ross walks in next.

W
OUT! Caught! Hales holes out and finally Boland has something to cheer about. The dangerous Alex Hales is back in the hut and Hurricanes can now dream of restricting them under 200. Slower delivery on a length. Hales looks to whack it over the square leg fence. He does not pick the pace of it and ends up heaving it straight to Milenko there in the deep. End of a very good knock by the Englishman but he'll be disappointed not to carry on and finish this innings. This wicket might end up making a vital difference of 20-25 runs.
14.3
1
Full on off, Ferguson moves away from the off pole and hits it towards sweeper cover for one. Just two off the over so far.

13.5
4
FOUR! The gap has been pierced perfectly! A short ball around off, Ferguson pulls it between deep square leg and deep mid-wicket. Wright runs to his left and thinks that he will be able to stop the ball with a dive. However, as he dives, the ball sneaks through him and goes to the fence.

SIX! Poor bowling from Ahmed and Hales takes a full toll on it. High full toss on middle, Hales powers it over deep mid-wicket for half a dozen.
Tactical Time-Out! After being under the pump, Thunder have managed to pull things back just a bit in the last couple of overs. Sydney Thunder have been given a very good platform by the opening pair of Hales and Khawaja. The former is still out in the middle and the side from Sydney will hope he can continue. His skipper who has been in good form has recently joined him and they will look to take their side past the 200-run mark. Hobart Hurricanes will look to strike a couple more wickets after the break and try to restrict them around 170 as this pitch has looked like a belter so far..

The square leg umpire has taken it upstairs. Replay rolls in and it shows Hales' foot went nowhere when the stumps where disturbed.

OUT! LBW! Nails the yorker does Faulkner and breaks the massive opening stand. It is another slower one from Faulkner. It is very full too. Khawaja is way too early in his flick and he misses. He gets to hit plumb on the front foot and the bowler appeal. The umpire quickly raises the finger.

FOUR! FIFTY FOR KHAWAJA! Brilliant knock from the southpaw. He is one of the most underrated T20 player and this innings should give him a lot of applauds that he deserves.
