Man of the Match
Laura Wolvaardt
Commentry
That ends the first game of this double header. South Africa become the first team from Group B to make it to the semis. Who will join them? If England beat West Indies, they are through. But if West Indies win, then the final match between South Africa and West Indies will decide who amongst England or West Indies make it through. The Eng-WI clash will begin at 7 pm local (0800 GMT). Hop over to that game!
Victorious South African skipper, Dane van Niekerk apologizes first up, to everyone, for kicking the ball during the second innings, admitting that emotions got the better of her. Credits Pakistan for giving them a run for their money, keeping coming at them and putting considerable pressure. Lauds Laura Wolvaardt's innings, especially because as she bats at the top and had to bat in the middle. Believes that there is still room for improvement, especially in the fielding while the top order needs to be more consistent.
Pakistan captain, Javeria Khan says that both fielding and bowling let them down. The first 16 overs and the last over with the bat was where they were strong, according to her. Believes that they should have restricted South Africa to under 120 but the plans were not executed well. Praises Laura Wolvaardt for playing a superb innings. On her own team's batting display, Javeria says that he batters need to understand when should they take the charge and not play shots at any stage.
LAURA WOLVAARDT HAS BEEN NAMED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH. Rates this innings as her most valuable contribution ever made to the team. Details that number 5 is a new role for her and she is trying to adjust but is enjoying the challenge. On the pitch, Wolvaardt says that it was on the slower side and the batters had to take some time before playing their shots. Feels proud that she could play well today and is happier that they have made it to the semis.
Kudos to South Africa for staying focussed. They could have lost their way after multiple mistakes but they kept believing and stuck to their guns. The bowling was excellent, defending 136 with ease. It was a total team effort, with only Ayabonga Khaka having an off day. Please stay tuned for the presentation...
Could this match have gone the other way? Yes, it could have. South Africa were 17/2. But Pakistan let the opportunity slip by. They got another chance, when they had them 64/4 but Laura Wolvaardt's cameo floored them. Then, with the bat, they were 18/0 in 3 overs but totally lost way from there.
Third win on the bounce for the Protea Women and they become the second team after India to qualify for the knockouts. They now await whether they will be first or second, but that too, is in their own hands, as they have a game left.

OUT! RUN OUT! That is unfortunate for Pakistan but poor cricket from their captain. Full on middle, Riaz drives this straight back. Tryon tries to stop it but the ball brushes her fingers and rolls back onto the stumps. She immediately starts celebrating because Javeria is well short of her crease. 137 to win for Pakistan. India defended 132 here against Australia. Looks like South Africa have got their semi final spot sealed. Stay tuned for the run chase.
Good bowling by Pakistan for most parts but the last 4 overs just let the game slip away. 45 runs came in those 24 balls and could cost them the World Cup. Diana Baig bowled her heart out, with figures of 4-1-19-2 while the others were decent too, except Aiman Anwer, who went for 43 in her 4 overs.
Coming to the innings, this is a very good score posted by the Protea Women. They started poorly, losing 2 wickets in the Powerplay but Marizanne Kapp and Mignon du Preez revived the innings with a decent stand. When both got dismissed in the span of 15 balls, it seemed like there was a collapse on the cards but Laura Wolvaardt's blinder got the team close to 140. She was playing a decent knock but the last 6 balls that she faced, she jut ran away.
Diana Baig has a chat with Melanie Jones. On her plans to bowl to Lizelle Lee, she says that it was pretty simple (does not tell it though). Adds that she told herself before the game that she would dismiss Lee and is happy that she did. On the pitch today, Baig says that normally there is good bounce in Canberra but today was not the case. So she took 5 minutes to adjust to the track. On bowling 3 overs in the Powerplay, Diana says that in this World Cup, she has been in good rhythm, hence she bowled those many overs in the fielding restrictions.

OUT! CAUGHT! That is given away. Kapp comes down the track and Aroob fires a full toss. A high one at that. Marizanne is surprised and looks to go over the top but is cramped for room slightly. Mistimes it and Iram Javed takes it calmly at long off. That is a big, big wicket. Both set batters dismissed in the span of 15 balls.

Very full, on leg stump, Kapp misses her flick and is hit on the pads. The ball deflects to the leg side and the batters take a late call to run. The bowler gets to the ball and has a shy at the bowler's end. But unfortunately for her, it hits Kapp's bat and deflects away.

OUT! BOWLED! Oh dear... that took ages to arrive. Full and outside off, du Preez looks to play the reverse sweep but the ball comes on very slowly, spins in and by that time, the shot is already through. The ball hits the glove, then the front pad and deflects onto the off stump. End of a reviving 37-run stand.

OUT! BOWLED! She has dragged it on. No review needed this time. A length ball, outside off, van Niekerk looks to hammer it through the off side but there is no feet movement. This is a cross-seam delivery. So it comes on a touch slower. All these factors contribute to an inside edge. The stumps are hit. The ploy to give Baig an extra over works.

NOT OUT! Well, well, well. Did we say plumb? Not at all, as per technology. That is why, we are not made for umpiring. A length ball, straight enough, van Niekerk gets across her stumps and looks to flick but misses. An appeal goes up and trust me, it does look plumb. But the non-striker does not feel so. She coolly asks her partner to take the review. There seems to be a technology failure and for that period, van Niekerk's heart would have been in her mouth. Because if it does not arrive, then the umpire's call would stay! But after nearly 5 minutes, they manage to get the technology working. First, Ultra Edge. Nothing on it. Now, Ball Tracker. Missing leg!
Dane van Niekerk has been adjudged LBW! She has taken the review though. After an age, technology starts working. Ball Tracker shows it to be MISSING LEG!

We are done with the anthems. The players are back out in the middle. Diana Baig will start off proceedings for the game. Lizelle Lee and Dane van Niekerk are the openers for the Saffas. Lee to face. Here we go...
Time for the national anthems. Pakistan's first up.
PITCH REPORT - Charlotte Edwards observing the pitch says that this is the same one which featured the Australia-India game of the tournament but also adds that the groundsmen have told here that this one would be a bit more pacy. Sees that there is no grass on the deck and predicts turn.
Pakistan skipper, Javeria Khan, says that she too, wanted to bat first. Is disappointed that Bismah Maroof is missing out but wants the other players to step up. On taking over the captaincy reigns in her 100th T20I, Khan says that it nothing new to her as she has taken captaincy in the past and she does not enjoy it one bit. Informs that there are two changes in the side. Syed Aroonb Shah comes in place of the injured Bismah Maroof while Sadia Iqbal has been rested and Anam Amin has been drafted in.
South African skipper, Dane van Niekerk, says that there will be something on the wicket first up but then could get slow as the game progresses. Informs that Marizane Kapp is back into the side in place of Nadine de Klerk. On the promotion of Lizelle Lee, van Niekerk smiles and says that if she can play the way she did the other day against 90 percent of the games would be great. Says that win and go through to the semis sounds simple on paper but it isn't.
TOSS - The flip of the coin has gone Dane van Niekerk's way. SOUTH AFRICA WILL BAT FIRST.
Hello and a warm welcome to game number 15 of the T20 World Cup in 2020. Today can be called as quarterfinals day. Win and you go through to the semis. Lose and you wait for another year to try and win the World Cup. South Africa meet Pakistan now, followed by the West Indies-England clash at the Sydney Showground Stadium.
