Man of the Match
Alex Hales
Commentry
That is it from this game. Alex Hales has been named the Man of the Match for his brisk 55. BBL action is not done for the day as Perth Scorchers take on Brisbane Heat in the second game of the day which is underway now. Switch tabs and join the coverage of that game.
Earlier in the day, Hurricanes after being put into bat scored 162 courtesy of some solid knock from Bailey, Caleb Jewel and Ben McDermott. Sydney Thunder were very good with the ball as two wickets by Morris and Sams laid the platform for the batters to finish the game.
The Hurricanes bowler started off badly but once they got rid of the opening pair, they tried to pull things back but unfortunately it came too late. Boland, Rogers and Rose were the pick of the bowlers. Ellis had a tough day in the field as all the pressure built by his teammates was released in the 17th over as he went for 15 in that.Qais Ahmed also had a tough time as he went for 40 in his 4.
The Thunder manage to get over the line. The have dragged themselves over the line but in the end they will be happy to get 2 points. They started the chase off very well and looked like they would coast to the finish line. Hales and Khawaja laid the platform with a 96-run opening stand, with the former taking the charge. The English opener was the destructor, scoring a 55 off 36. But once Hales departed, Thunder started to lose the plot. A simple chase started to get complicated and from 96/0 they found themselves reeling at 118/4. Alex Ross held their nerve towards the end and his unbeaten 32 ensured that the hosts get over the line.

Tactical Time-Out has been taken. Sydney Thunder were going so well till the 11th over when Alex Hales and Usman Khawaja were going strong at the crease. Alex Hales fell just after his fifty and that opened the floodgates. They have lost three wickets in three overs and now need to bat very well to win this. Hobart Hurricanes have done really well to make a comeback and would want to pick up further wickets. An interesting passage of play awaits.

Good length delivery pitching on off and it comes in. Ferguson shuffles across to his off pole and looks to flick. He misses and gets hit on the pads. There is a huge appeal from the Hurricanes' players and the umpire raises his finger. WIDE! Rogers starts with a full delivery down the leg side, Khawaja looks to flick but misses it.
Back for the run chase. Alex Hales and Usman Khawaja are in the middle to begin Thunder's reply. Thomas Rogers will start the proceedings for Hobart Hurricanes.
It's that kind of a target which can keep everyone interested. Hobart would feel that they can fight with it while the Thunder would back themselves to scale it down. The start in the Powerplay will be critical for both sides. Let's wait and find out how it pans out. Do join us in a short while.
Sydney Thunder were excellent with the ball, especially in the middle overs. They were disciplined more often than not. Daniel Sams and Chris Morris put up a tidy performance and bagged two wickets apiece. The rest also contributed, however, more was expected from Arjun Nair and Liam Bowe in terms of providing breakthroughs.
After losing their openers and the move to send Simon Milenko at three didn't work, the Hurricanes looked like losing their way YET AGAIN this season but then George Bailey and Ben McDermott formed an alliance to bring Hobart on track. Their 64-run stand laid the foundation but the big hits were lacking at the death. If it was not for the cameo of Clive Rose, they would have ended up with a below par total.
14 runs in the final over and Hobart Hurricanes have managed to push their total beyond the 160-run mark. They gathered 48 runs in the final 5 overs and would consider it as a good finish for them. After put to bat, their openers provided a decent start but then the Thunder struck with a couple of cheap wickets off ordinary deliveries.

Laughter all around as Bailey gets completed deceived by the clever change in pace. Sams is smiling but he is disappointed not to get a wicket off. Bowls a slower delivery outside off, on the shorter side, Bailey initially shapes up for the pull shot but then realizes that the ball is coming a lot slowly. He tries to slam it over point after that but loses his posture and ends up missing it completely. Bailey is also smiling!

Tactical Time-Out! Hobart Hurricanes got a decent start but after losing both the openers are in a little bit of fix. Given the ordinary batting form of their middle order, this is the period they need to be wary about. The Thunder would feel in control after getting two cheap wickets but cannot afford to take anything lightly. They have to be at their best in the coming overs as the likes of Bailey and Miller, who is yet to come, can really up the scoring rate.
