Man of the Match

Right then, that's all we have from this exciting match. South Africa were in early pressure but bounced back superbly and ended up with a convincing win. The action now shifts to the Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein for the second ODI on the 4th of March. Do join us at 1300 local (1100 GMT). Cheers!
South African skipper, Quinton de Kock, says that he is pleased with the way his boys went about it today. Lauds Klaasen for his knock and praises Ngidi for the way he bowled. Adds that they knew they had hitters down the order and it was just a matter of staying there and being consistent in what they do. Shares that Ngidi has a knack of picking wickets and he is enjoying his leadership role. On his role as an opener/keeper/captain, de Kock replies that he has always felt that his keeping helps him in captaincy and he feels it won't be the same if he goes out in the outfield. Signs off by saying that he is still feeling fresh and good!
Australian skipper, Aaron Finch, says that it was a good start by his bowlers but Klaasen and Miller batted superbly. Admits that they lost wickets pretty consistently and that cost them the match. Tells that they got outplayed in all the disciplines and South Africa were the better side. Mentions that you expect nothing less from the Proteas and hopes to bounce back in the second game.
HEINRICH KLAASEN IS THE MAN OF THE MATCH! Says that it's a great feeling and that's why that celebration came off. Adds that the last year and a half have been tough for him and he is relieved with today's performance. Mentions that it felt like another comeback and he just stuck to the game plan and is happy to perform for the team. Praises David Miller for his knock which took the pressure off him. States that they just needed to bat deep and bat with low risk. Further says that David Miller allowed him to play his natural game and then he unleashed a little more.
Earlier in the day, South Africa opted to bat but found themselves in troubled waters after losing three quick wickets. But Heinrich Klaasen dug in deep and put on a great show with the bat. His partnerships with Kyle Verreynne and David Miller bailed the African team out and they managed to post a very challenging total on the board. In defense, the bowlers turned up to tighten the noose and it was a complete bowling performance by them. A near clinical win to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Stay tuned for the presentation...
Steven Smith fought a brave battle for Australia. Till the time he was in the middle, Australia had hope. He constructed a couple of stands and was laying the platform for an onslaught in the death overs. However, the period when Mitchell Marsh and Smith departed in consecutive overs hurt their chances badly. Post that, there was very little fight shown by the Kangaroos and they succumbed to a heavy defeat.
A very efficient defense from South Africa! They bowled according to the plan and stuck to the basics. After dismissing the Aussie openers fairly cheaply, there was a partnership that blossomed between Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne but the Protea bowlers didn't lose hope. They held their nerves and concentrated on drying out the boundaries. This can be substantiated by the fact that it took Australia 18 overs to hit their first boundary after Powerplay 1.

OUT! In the air... taken! Shamsi does pick one and it is a big wicket of Carey. The pressure of the run rate creeping up gets the better of Carey. OUT! LBW! Is that the game for South Africa? Well, two set batters back in the hut and with still another 118 runs needed, you have to feel so. Nortje lands this on a length and around middle, it skids through after pitching. Smith looks to flick but misses. It hits the pad, a huge appeal goes up and so does the finger. Smith does have a chat with Carey but then starts walking back. He is very disappointed with himself. This game has changed in the course of two overs here. Ball Tracker shows it to be hitting the leg pole.

OUT! Bowled! Ngidi comes and strikes again. It is a gem of a delivery from Lungi and Marsh is completely outdone by it. The budding stand comes to an end. Good length delivery outside off, Marsh looks to drive it on the up but the ball tails back in and goes right between the gate of bat and pad to disturb the off pole. NOT OUT. Close? Yes. Close in hitting the 6th stump down the leg side. Poor de Kock. Blindly trusted his bowler. Did not use his own judgement. A length ball, down the leg side, Smith missed his flick and was hit on the pads. Phehlukwayo appealed but the umpire moved away. The bowler as confident that was hitting the stumps and his captain went with him, without even waiting to think. Ball Tracker shows the impact itself to be outside leg. Review wasted.

OUT! CAUGHT! The third umpire has gone with the soft signal. Full and outside off, Warner pushes at this uppishly. The ball dips onto Kyle Verreyne at cover-point who dives forward, takes the catch and claims it. But Warner stands his ground. The Proteas are confident and the umpires get to confer. They refer it upstairs with the soft signal as out. The first replay seems to indicate that the ball has gone into the palms, with the fingers underneath the ball. But the more you look at it, the more you feel it has bounced. Eventually, OUT flashes on the giant screen. Both the openers dismissed inside Powerplay 1. 243 more needed from 246 balls.
Is that a legal catch? South Africa are celebrating. But David Warner is going nowhere. The umpires get together now. The soft signal is... OUT. We are back for the run chase. A cloudless sky awaits us. The Proteas get into a huddle. Out come the Aussie openers. Aaron Finch and David Warner. Oh. This is interesting. Spin straightaway. Keshav Maharaj to bowl with the first new ball. The aim is to take the pace off the ball against two power-hitters. Warner to face.
292 to win then, on a two-paced track. Australia would have to play out of their skins to chase this down. Stay tuned for their reply.
The 5th bowler hurt Australia as Marsh and Short went for 70 in 10 overs combined. Starc and Hazlewood were good in patches while Cummins and Zampa were excellent. Now, the fielding. It was extremely shoddy, something which you would expect Aaron Finch to speak about in the post-match presentation. They could have saved at least 15-20 runs, but for their lacklustre effort.
It was Heinrich Klaasen who summed up the pitch to perfection. Did not play too many strokes till he got to his 70s and only after being set, did he play his shots. Batsmen either side of him struggled to adapt to the conditions, even David Miller, who still got to 64 but played shots worth yielding 128. And that is where Australia let loose the grip.
Good finish by Australia but South Africa would be very happy with this total. They were staring down the barrel at 126/4 in the 27th over but Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller took the game away. The Aussies let the Proteas off the hook as a wicket there could have seen the Saffas get bundled under 200.
Heinrich Klaasen has a chat with Mark Nicholas. Says that it is an unbelievable feeling to get to that century. Agrees that the pitch is a good one to bat on but if you bowl well, you can get the wickets. Hopes that his bowlers mix up their pace and lengths and make use of the two-paced nature of the deck.

Oh.... missed! How did that miss the bat? How did that miss the stumps? Klaasen lines Starc up, coming from around the wicket and attempts the reverse paddle. OUT! Caught behind! Very close to a no ball but Cummins is just about fine. A short ball, around off, Miller gets across, looks to pull but finds no pace to work with. Just 124 kph. He is cramped for room and gloves it to the keeper. Miller starts to walk off but the umpire wants to check for the overstepping. Refers it upstairs and Cummins just about has something behind the line. That ends a magnificent 149-run stand. Could be a match-winning one. Not quite back to form, is Miller, but he at least got some runs today.

Drinks break. Australia have thoroughly dominated the game so far and South Africa are on the mat. Inexperience is showing in their batting and currently Verreynne and Klaasen are trying to build a partnership. The middle phase when the conditions will ease out a bit and the spinners will be in action, let's see how the Proteas deal with that period.

OUT! Caught behind! Big wicket for the Aussies, they have got the big fish. The South African skipper is back in the hut. Change of ends for Hazlewood works wonders for his team. Hazlewood bowls a typical Hazlewood delivery. It is on a length, just outside off. De Kock looks to run it down towards third man. The ball though is close to the stumps for Quinton to play that shot. He still goes for it and ends up kissing the ball to the keeper. OUT! LBW! It has hit the boot first and it is an excellent review from Australia. They strike on the very first ball of the game. Terrible start for Malan on his ODI debut. He grabs a golden duck in his first outing. Superb bowling from Starc. Nobody wants to face such peach at the start of the innings and definitely not on debut. Starc steams in and bowls a very full ball on middle and leg. It is almost on a yorker length. It angles in beautifully to the right-hander. Malan looks to flick but misses. There is a huge appeal from the Aussies but the umpire turns it down. Aaron Finch signals the 'T' after a brief thought. Replay rolls in and Ultra Edge shows that the ball hit the boot before the bat. Ball Tracker then rolls in and it shows three reds. Malan has to walk back and his dream day has turned into nightmare. Perfect start for Australia.
Review straightaway on the first ball. It is for an LBW. Janneman Malan is the man in question. Has the ball hit his pad first or has it hit the bat? If it has hit the pad then it will be difficult for Malan to survive. Let's see what the replays have to say.
We are all set for the action to begin. The Australian side are in a huddle before they take their respective position in the field. South African skipper, Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan stride out to open the innings for South Africa. Mitchell Starc to start the proceedings with the first new ball.
Australia Playing XI - David Warner, Aaron Finch (C), Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, D'Arcy Short, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (WK), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.
South Africa Playing XI - Quinton de Kock (WK/C), Janneman Malan (ODI DEBUT), Temba Bavuma, Kyle Verreynne (ODI DEBUT), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi.
Australian skipper, Aaron Finch says it is a dry wicket and hopes that it remains the same. Informs, Hazlewood, Labuschagne and Short are in the side in place of Kane Richardson, Ashton Agar and Matthew Wade. Tells Marnus has had a great year and hopes that he can continue. On the final T20, Finch says it was great and especially because it was a 'finals like game'.
South African skipper, Quinton de Kock says that it is a good wicket and might stop later hence the decision. On the ground, he says it is a lovely stadium and it is a good day though there is a cloud cover. Tells it is a great time to give the young guys a chance. On Bavuma's return, he says it is great to have him back as he is in good form in white-ball cricket.
TOSS - It's toss time! South African skipper, Quinton de Kock spins the coin. Australian skipper, Aaron Finch calls it incorrectly. SOUTH AFRICA OPT TO BAT!
Hello and welcome to the first ODI between South Africa and Australia. After an entertaining T20I series, it is time for the longest format in white ball cricket. South African skipper, Quinton de Kock will hope to get over the line after losing the T20Is. The hosts will want other players to stand up and deliver along with their skipper. Australia, on the other hand, will look to continue their good form and take the momentum from the shortest format. The Aussies have been clinical and would look to continue that. Can the rebuilding South African side take an early lead in this short series or will the Aussies pile on their misery?
