Jalal Yunus, the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) chairman of cricket operations, has resigned from his post effective immediately. This development follows the nation’s political unrest.
Intense student protests that resulted in a change of administration were part of the recent social turmoil in Bangladesh. The level of political tension increased to such an extent that Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister, was compelled to flee her own country.
Attacks on public spaces and the residences of celebrities were another outcome of the unrest. As a new government began to take shape in Bangladesh, nations including Australia, India, and England issued strong travel advisories in response to the unstable situation. On Monday, Yunus, who was a director on the BCB as well, announced his retirement.
“I have resigned from the board for the interest of cricket,” Jalal Yunus said.
Nazmul Hasan has also declared his intention to step down.
It’s likely that the resignation marks the beginning of a number of changes at BCB. Notably, BCB president Nazmul Hasan has stated that he would be open to leaving his position in order to support cricket and work with the incoming administration.
Student protests that compelled the Awami League government to quit marked the beginning of the political turmoil that resulted in these developments. The protests were so intense that they caused widespread disruption and property destruction across the nation in addition to toppling the current government.
In the meantime, Bangladesh is preparing for a set of two Test matches against Pakistan, which will begin in Rawalpindi on August 21.
