Ben Stokes, thinking about the chance that was lost, came forward and compared it to when Lyon missed the runout in 2019, when the English captain led his team to a great win at Headingley. The Ashes 2023 series is still going on, and it got off to a great start when Pat Cummins led Australia to a victory over England at their home ground. It was a nail-biter.
As the game got close to the end, it was up to the captain, Cummins, to chase down the goal and help the Aussies win a great game at Edgbaston. Nathan Lyon could have been out of the game when England‘s captain, Ben Stokes, dropped a catch that he should have caught. It’s important to note that Lyon and Cummins went 16 runs without getting out, and Lyon’s hit was a big reason why Australia was able to reach the goal.
“It’s amazing. It’s kind of like when Gaz Lyon dropped the ball over the stumps at Headingley. Isn’t it amazing how the world turns back on itself? You know, I dropped that catch, and in the end, he wasn’t out. He was still on the pitch as a batter for Australia, which won.
“It’s crazy how things work out like that,” Ben Stokes said at the press meeting after the game.
“God, I’m living it all over again in my head. I had the ball in my hand, but I couldn’t get it to stick. One of those times when you wish you had done something different. Still, it would have been a nice catch, wouldn’t it?” Ben Stokes added.
“It’s mad how things go around, isn’t it?”

Australia won a great game because Pat Cummins played well in all areas.
Australia needed 174 runs to win on Day 5 in order to reach their goal of 281 runs. With Usman Khawaja and Scott Boland on strike,. Boland was sent home early in the day after England’s first strike. But once again, it was Khawaja who was amazing for Australia. After making a great hundred in the first inning, the 36-year-old put up an amazing 55-run partnership with Lyon in the second inning that helped Australia win.
England kept getting wickets, but it was Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, who made the big hit that helped them win. Cummins scored 44 runs in 73 balls to help win the first Test of the Ashes in 2023. He did this by working well with Nathan Lyon.
