Gujarat Titans began their championship defense in style by defeating Chennai Super Kings by five wickets in the opening match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to kick off season 16 of the Indian Premier League. As of 2019, the IPL will be played in a “home-and-away” format for the first time. This is expected to make the current season even more successful.
Jio Cinema and Star Sports have been in a fierce competition to attract as many people as possible to watch the T20 extravaganza on their respective platforms, which has added to the fans’ anticipation for the 16th season of the Indian Premier League. Star Sports is the owner of the IPL television rights, whereas Jio Cinema is the owner of the IPL streaming rights.
As a result, both businesses have recruited various prominent cricketing figures to promote their own platforms. While JioCinema got up MS Dhoni, Suryakumar Yadav and Sachin Tendulkar, Star Sports have Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja.
These firms have even offered technologies to improve the viewing experience for sports lovers. While JioCinema has introduced new camera angles to provide fans with a 360-degree view of the field in 4K clarity, Star Sports has introduced an innovative feature that enables fans to view real-time highlights, crucial moments of the game, and vital statistics with the simple touch of a button.
IPL: The world’s second-most valuable sports league
Fans like the off-field competition between the two firms to attract maximum attention to their respective platforms. At the 2022 IPL media rights auction, Star Sports won the T20 extravaganza’s television rights for a record INR 23,575 crore for five seasons.
Viacom18, the parent company of Jio Cinema, purchased the digital rights for INR 20,500 billion. The BCCI sold the IPL media rights for a record INR 48,390 crores over a five-year period, making the tournament the second most valuable in the globe. In terms of per-match value, the IPL is second only to the National Football League after the record-breaking auction.
