Ever since its inception in 2008, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has revolutionized franchise-based formats worldwide. There are still a few cricketers who were there when it first started and who will play the game when the competition gets ready for its 17th season in 2024.
A number of gifted athletes entered the auction during the league’s inaugural season. Virat Kohli joined the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and among them was the legendary MS Dhoni of the Chennai Super Kings.
Rohit Sharma, who began with the Deccan Chargers in 2009 and went on to become a Mumbai Indians mainstay, is one of the other faces. All-round player Ravindra Jadeja is currently at CSK after beginning his career with the Rajasthan Royals. In 2024, Ravichandran Ashwin will make a return to Rajasthan, having previously graced the Chennai Super Kings.
Throughout the years, Amit Mishra, Piyush Chawla, and Shikhar Dhawan have all played for different teams. Ajinkya Rahane, who is versatile, has played for several clubs, including his current squad, the Chennai Super Kings. Manish Pandey became the first Indian player to score a century in 2009.
The seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik debuted in the Indian Premier League with the Delhi Daredevils in 2008 and will play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2024. Wriddhiman Saha and Ishant Sharma both began their careers with the Kolkata Knight Riders before moving on to play for different teams. Among those who have played for different teams are Rishi Dhawan and Swapnil Singh.

Virat Kohli is unique among the 15 players in that he has only ever played for one team. Over the years, a few others have changed their bases. Originally, eight teams were allowed to compete, but two more teams have since been added.
Several nations have now modeled their franchise cricket tournaments after the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is one of the biggest franchise cricket competitions in the world.
