Ben Stokes, England’s Test captain, has declared that his squad does not “fear” Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Speaking ahead of the first Test at Headingley, Stokes recognised Bumrah’s world-class bowling skills but stated that he lacks the capacity to win a Test series for India on his own.
Stokes underlined that England often faces top-tier opposition in international cricket, and that, while they have enormous respect for their opponents, fear is never an option.
“Have no fear. In international cricket, you constantly face quality opponents.
“We know his class and what he brings to any team he plays for, but we don’t fear him,” Ben Stokes stated ahead of the first Test.
“I don’t think one bowler will win the series for either team. All 11 [players] must stand up. I don’t believe there is simply one guy on either team who has the key to success,” he said.
The Indian speedster has an incredible record against England in Test cricket. In 14 Tests against the Three Lions, Bumrah has taken 60 wickets. His efforts in English conditions have been equally impressive, with 37 wickets in nine Tests for an average of 26.27. Overall, his bowling average versus England is 22.16.
Bumrah has repeatedly plagued Stokes, particularly with deliveries angled in from around the wicket and aimed at his off stump. Even during England’s 2024 India tour, Stokes struggled against Bumrah.
Meanwhile, England has named their starting XI for the first Test at Headingley. Ollie Pope will bat third, ahead of youthful Jacob Bethell, and the pace attack will be led by Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, and Josh Tongue. Shoaib Bashir, an off-spinner, has been named the only specialist spinner.
