Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20I captain, is apparently in London, although not as part of the current Test series against England. While Shubman Gill and his team prepare for the five-match Test series, Suryakumar is in the UK for a medical operation that he is expected to have in the coming days. Though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not provided an official update, rumours suggest that the procedure could take a month or two to fully recover.
Given the present gap in India’s white-ball calendar and the lack of immediate foreign assignments, particularly in T20Is, the 34-year-old hitter has an opportunity to work on his fitness and recovery.
India’s next shortest-format assignment is in August, when they will travel to Bangladesh for a white-ball tour, followed by home series against South Africa and the West Indies, and then an away series against Australia.
Suryakumar Yadav resolve to return to full health is expected to help him prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar was in excellent batting form in the last IPL, leading the run charts for his side, the Mumbai Indians, with 717 runs in 16 innings at an average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.9. Suryakumar scored 25 or more runs in all 16 games he played, setting a men’s T20 record for consecutive 25-plus scores.
His performances were critical in propelling the Mumbai Indians to the playoffs. MI’s magical season came to an end with a loss to the Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2. Following the IPL, he played for Triumph Knights MNE in the Mumbai T20 League. However, his squad had a poor run, winning only one of five games and losing out on the playoffs. In the league, he scored 122 runs over five innings.
