South Africa has announced a 16-player roster for the forthcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe, which will begin on June 28 at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Temba Bavuma will captain the team, with numerous new names joining the red-ball roster.

The series represents a new chapter for the Proteas after their historic victory in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025, where they defeated Australia at Lord’s to earn their first ICC trophy in 27 years.

Aiden Markram, who was named Player of the Match in the WTC Final, has been rested for the next Test series, as have pacers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen. Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton, Senuran Muthusamy, and Dane Paterson have also been given a rest, opening up possibilities for future players.

Several WTC winners, including David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Wiaan Mulder, and Kyle Verreynne, have retained their spots for the Zimbabwe tour. Matthew Breetzke, the wicketkeeper-batsman, and Dewald Brevis, a promising talent who is likely to make his Test debut, have both been called up. Zubayr Hamza, who has played eight Tests, returns to the squad.

Kwena Maphaka, a pace sensation, has joined the bowling attack, and 19-year-old Lhuan-dre Pretorius is expected to make his Test debut. Lesego Senokwane, a middle-order batsman, also makes the squad. Prenelan Subrayen and Codi Yusuf, both all-rounders, have been brought in to add depth to the middle order.

The first Test will take place from June 28 to July 2, followed by the second from July 6 to 10, all at Bulawayo’s Queens Sports Club.
