The second qualifier for the IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League) in Ahmedabad was a high-scoring thriller between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS). The match saw a remarkable effort from PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer, whose spectacular unbeaten knock of 87* off 41 deliveries propelled the franchise to its second IPL final in 11 years.

The prolific middle-order batsman’s undefeated innings featured five fours and eight sixes. He also had an impressive strike rate of 212.2 during the innings. Former PBKS batting coach Sanjay Bangar also offered his thoughts on Iyer’s innings, praising not only his strokes but also his cool demeanour during the game. Bangar recalled other classic shots, such as Iyer steering Jasprit Bumrah’s yorker through third man for a boundary.

“There is a lot to like about Shreyas Iyer’s overall approach. The way he lets the batter on the other end to play their natural game is critical, and his ability to form partnerships made the difference. Some of the shots he made, particularly against quality yorkers, guiding them past short third and point and even threading one through fine third man, were incredible, especially with the game on the line. Shreyas made an excellent effort. His expertise and composure were critical in navigating a formidable Mumbai Indians assault, which he demolished by timing his shots and targeting the appropriate bowlers,” Bangar stated exclusively on JioHotstar.

Shreyas Iyer Performance in IPL 2025

In terms of Shreyas Iyer’s performance this season, he is currently PBKS’ best run-getter in the tournament, with 603 runs from 16 matches at an average of 54.81 and an amazing strike rate of 175.80. He has six half-centuries this season, with his greatest score of 97 coming against the Gujarat Titans in the Punjab franchise’s debut game.

Iyer has also demonstrated his leadership abilities by becoming the first captain to reach the IPL finals with three separate franchises, as well as the first captain to win back-to-back titles with two different clubs, having done it in 2024 while guiding the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
