In Match 43 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Friday, April 25, Dewald Brevis made his batting debut for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before Kamindu Mendis of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ended his innings with a catch of the century.

Brevis started his IPL 2025 debut on a two-paced Chepauk surface with a steady start.

The South African right-hander hit Mendis for three maximums in an over after scoring 17 off his first 17 deliveries.

In the twelfth over, the ambidextrous spinner from Sri Lanka, who had removed Ravindra Jadeja and given up just six runs in his opening two overs, felt the fury of Brevis’ willow.

Before going on the defensive and tossing one over deep mid-wicket, Brevis gave Mendis a nice six down the ground. Brevis finished the over with another maximum over long-on, collecting 20 runs from the over.

To go from 17 off 17 to 42 off 25 deliveries, the Proteas batsman then grabbed Harshal Patel’s off-cutter and smashed it for a six over deep extra cover. As SRH was beginning to feel the strain, Mendis did something out of the ordinary to send Brevis back in the hut.

Harshal delivered a complete delivery to the South African, who slammed it with tremendous force in the direction of the far area. Despite the lack of elevation, the ball was moving towards the fence like a bullet.

The ball was bending away from the Sri Lankan as Mendis began to run to his left. Mendis, who is a spin bowler, dove full-stretch to his left like a goalie and secured the catch with both hands after realising he wouldn’t be able to get his body behind the ball.

In addition, Mendis avoided hitting the ground with his elbows, leaving Brevis and the rest of the field in full disbelief. Pat Cummins, the captain of SRH, was as astounded by what Mendis had accomplished.
If it weren’t for Mendis’ outstanding play on the pitch, Brevis may have scored much more. He scored 42 off 25 deliveries.
