Rohit Sharma, the former Indian T20I captain, talked about ‘the moment’ of the 2024 T20 World Cup final a year after the memorable seven-run victory over South Africa in Barbados. With the victory, Rohit won his first ICC trophy as captain, as well as his second T20 World Cup victory in his international career.
According to Rohit, the most memorable moment was Suryakumar Yadav’s sensational catch of David Miller at the long-off boundary. Rohit described how tense that specific sequence of play was for both him and the squad.
“Even after the catch, the umpires sent it up to the third umpire, who was checking to see if Surya had caught the ball, and everyone’s hearts were racing. I believed it had gone [for six]. Because I was at [long-on], I stood opposite Surya. “I was already thinking ’10 needed off five balls’, but then I saw that it was coming to Surya,” Rohit told JioHotstar during the retrospective celebration of the memorable trophy triumph.
He also shared his thoughts and a sample of his conversation with Suryakumar while waiting for the ultimate judgement to be shown on the big screen.
“I was standing with Surya while they were checking the catch, and I told him, ‘You only tell me [whether it was a catch or not], and I don’t want to look [at the big screen]. Suryakumar responded, “No-no, I caught it.” But then I noticed him on the side saying someone, ‘Maybe, I don’t know. But I caught it. They then showed the camera zooming in, and when the ball or feet touched the boundary rope, it moved but nothing happened. So we were a little pleased.
But unless it is on the board, you never know what the third umpire is thinking,” Rohit Sharma explained.
Although Rohit did not contribute much with the bat in the summit clash, he was instrumental in playing a huge role to India winning the silverware. Rohit emerged as the leading run-scorer for the nation (257 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 156.70) in that edition, only behind Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s tally of 281 runs by 24 runs.
