Kirby Short, a former WBBL (Women’s Big Bash League) title-winning captain, is transitioning into a high-performance role after working as a broadcaster and director for Queensland Cricket. Short has been named Cricket Victoria’s new head of female cricket.

The 38-year-old captained the Brisbane Heat Women to back-to-back WBBL titles in 2018-19 and 2019-20, appearing in 67 matches as a quality spin-bowling all-rounder. She scored 945 runs in 54 innings, including three half centuries. Short also guided the Queensland Fire to a successful career in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL). She takes over as Victoria’s new head of female cricket under general manager of high performance Graham Manou, succeeding Sharelle McMahon, who departed last year to return to netball in a high performance post.

Short ended his playing career in 2020, although he has remained in the sport as a director with Queensland Cricket and a commentator for Fox Sports and Channel Seven.

Despite being from Queensland, Kirby Short is pleased to join Victoria, where she has a family connection.

“My grandpa, Mick Harvey, grew up in Fitzroy and was a proud Victorian, so it feels appropriate that I have the opportunity to contribute to the progress of women’s cricket in this state. Victoria has a strong history in the sport, and I’m excited to take on this new job in Melbourne, working with the brilliant players and devoted staff to continue that heritage,” Short told.

Meanwhile, Manou welcomed Kirby to the setup, emphasising her leadership abilities and expertise. He anticipated that her addition would assist raise the level of women’s cricket in Victoria.

“We’re delighted to welcome Kirby to Cricket Victoria for an important position in our cricket performance programme. “Kirby’s leadership abilities, combined with her extensive experience in elite cricket, will be invaluable as we continue to invest in and elevate women’s cricket in our state,” he stated.
