On Day 4 of the first Test at Headingley, England got off to a good start when Brydon Carse dismissed Indian captain Shubman Gill in the second over of the morning session. Gill, who had hit a magnificent 147 in the first innings, was bowled for a measly 16-ball eight.
As Day 4 began, with KL Rahul batting on 47*, the visitors hoped to bat long the next day and attain a manageable total. But early in the morning session, the Englishmen got the wicket they desired. Carse bowled with a natural angle into the right-handers, strengthening his lines against Gill. In the sixth over of the innings, he struck a length ball that nipped back. Gill’s attempt to hit the ball down to third man resulted in an inside edge that sliced into the stumps, forcing the Indian captain to walk the lengthy distance back into the dugout.

India hope 300 plus total
The right-handed batter, who had anchored the first innings with brilliance, couldn’t repeat the feat. His exit saw India’s scorecard read 98/3, with their lead standing at 104 runs. However, with Rishabh Pant walking in and KL Rahul still at the crease, India will need to post a target of over 300 to put pressure on England.
With Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shardul Thakur still to come, the visitors will be confident to post a respectable total on the board and hope their bowlers do the rest of the job. With Bumrah picking a fifer in the first innings, his 14th in Test cricket, the ace pacer will once again be Gill’s main weapon against the English batters.
In the first innings, India had posted 471 in their first innings after being asked to bat first, thanks to centuries from Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant. In reply, the hosts made a brilliant comeback with Ollie Pope’s hundred and Harry Brook’s 99 to reach 465, trailing by just six runs. Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket haul was the highlight of India’s bowling efforts.
