Faf du Plessis changed history by scoring an unbeaten 103 off 53 balls in the Texas Super Kings’ match against MI New York in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025. This was his second tonne in the ongoing competition, following his first against the San Francisco Unicorns.

With this tonne, du Plessis became the first cricketer in 20-over history to score multiple tonnes after reaching 40. It was also his eighth T20 century as captain, the most in T20 cricket history to date.

Most tons in T20s as captain (as of June 29, 2025):

Player Centuries
Faf du Plessis 8
Babar Azam 7
Michael Klinger 7
Virat Kohli 5
James Vince 5
Faf du Plessis also became the first hitter in MLC history to score three tonnes, surpassing Finn Allen and Nicholas Pooran, who both scored twice.

Coming into the match, Texas won by 39 runs after successfully defending their 223-run total. They lost four wickets while getting there. du Plessis’ outstanding innings included five fours and nine sixes, while Donovan Ferreira’s blistering knock of 53 off 20 aided the squad. All of New York’s bowlers gave up runs at a 10-plus economy rate.

In reply, New York could make only 184/9 in their 20 overs. There was no other significant contribution barring Kieron Pollard’s 70 off 39. Akeal Hosein secured the Player of the Match award for conceding only 15 runs and bagging three wickets in his four-over quota. Although slightly expensive, Nandre Burger (2/40 in four overs) and Marcus Stoinis (2/43 in four overs) chipped in with two wickets apiece.
