Ravichandran Ashwin, a veteran Indian all-rounder, has been fined 30% of his match fee for expressing displeasure with an umpire’s decision during a recent Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 match between Dindigul Dragons and IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans at Coimbatore on 8 June.
According to TNPL officials, Ashwin was penalised 10% for expressing dissent and an additional 20% for equipment usage after being dismissed. A match referee hearing was held after the game, and the Dindigul Dragons captain accepted the sanctions without protest.
“A hearing was held by the match referee following the game. Ashwin was penalised 10% for expressing displeasure with the umpires and 20% for misusing equipment. “He accepted the sanctions,” a TNPL official informed.
IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans win by nine wickets.
The event occurred in the fifth over of Dindigul’s innings, when Ashwin, who opened for the Dragons, attempted a sweep shot off Tiruppur skipper R Sai Kishore. The ball struck his pads, and Kritika, the on-field umpire, called him out lbw. However, the 38-year-old was dissatisfied with the judgement, believing that the ball had been pitched outside the leg stump line.
Unfortunately for the Dragons’ skipper, no reviews were available, as both referrals had previously been utilised for wide-ball calls.
Following his dismissal, Ashwin argued with the umpire.
As he walked back to the pavilion, he struck his pads with the bat and then hurled his gloves in frustration.
The right-handed batsman died after scoring 18 runs, sparking a hitting collapse for the Dindigul Dragon. The side was eventually reduced to 93 all out, losing their last nine wickets for 54 runs. Tiruppur’s bowlers, Esakkimuthu A (4 wickets), M Mathivannan (3 wickets), and R Sai Kishore (2 wickets), took wickets at regular intervals.
In reply, Tiruppur Tamizhans easily chased down the score, finishing in 11.5 overs with nine wickets in hand. Tushar Raheja scored an undefeated 65 off 39 deliveries to lead his club to their first win of the season.
