Alyssa Healy, Australia’s women’s captain, has dismissed speculation that the 2025 ODI World Cup will be her last, stressing her desire to continue playing after the flagship event. After a difficult year plagued by injuries, Healy is now hoping to make a successful comeback, not only to lead Australia’s title defence in India, but also to play in the upcoming home summer.

The 35-year-old last played in January during the Women’s Ashes Test, where she appeared as a pure batter due to a stress fracture in her foot, which prevented her from keeping wicket. This ailment, combined with a previous knee problem, kept her out of significant competitions such as the WBBL, the ODI series in New Zealand, and the Women’s Premier League in India.

“It has probably shifted slightly. It’s helped me recognise that I still want to do more than I previously imagined. At the same time, there are things in life that are more essential than wearing green and gold. So it’s just a continuous reassessment. However, for the time being, I’d like to spend my summer at home. “I want to bring the World Cup home, but also play against India (in February-March),” Healy

The Australia A series against India A in August will mark Healy’s comeback to action, as she works to regain full match fitness ahead of the ODI World Cup in October-November. She has been named to both the one-day and Twenty20 squads, with Tahlia McGrath leading the 50-over format.

Alyssa Healy has not kept wickets in a match since January

“But at the moment, I definitely want to play a home summer. I want to bring the World Cup home, but also to play against India (in February-March),” he added.

Australia are looking to become the first team since 1988 to win back-to-back ODI World Cups. Since Meg Lanning’s retirement in 2023, Healy has spent her time and energy on guiding a new side to another title. Interestingly, Healy has not kept wickets in a match since January, but is confident of her workload management.
