Shubman Gill, a gifted young batsman from India, is named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September after scoring runs during his nation’s trophy-winning Asia Cup campaign and the ensuing ODI series against Australia. Chamari Athapaththu, a legendary bowler from Sri Lanka, is named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month after her T20I batting and bowling accomplishments last month helped her side win their first series on English soil.
Both players receive votes from fans around the world who have registered on icc-cricket.com, as well as from an expert panel made up of ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, and media members.
The August Player of the Month, Pakistan’s Babar Azam, is now within striking distance of 2023’s ICC Men’s Player of the Month, Gill, who has enjoyed a whirlwind run of form that has propelled him up the ICC Men’s ODI batting rankings.
In September’s ODI cricket, the 24-year-old scored a ton of runs. He began the month with half-centuries against Pakistan and Nepal before passing three figures against Bangladesh in Colombo on his way to the championship. Gill stayed at the wicket to watch his team cross the finish line as they chased down 51 to win the low-scoring conclusion.
After the Asia Cup was over, Gill continued to shine in the series that followed against Australia, scoring 104 runs at more than a run per ball in Indore and 74 runs in Mohali.
His 480 runs throughout the month were hit at a strike rate of 99.37 and an average of 80.
“I am thrilled to have won the ICC Player of the Month award for the month of September,” stated Gill in response to receiving the honor. Being able to support the team’s goals and represent India internationally is a huge honor. This honor will encourage me even more to pursue greatness and represent the nation with pride.
“I was able to contribute in a useful way to the side that had the good fortune to win the Asia Cup in 2023 and then follow it up with a victory in an ODI series against Australia in September. I would like to take this chance to express my gratitude to all of my teammates, family, and coaches, without whom this accomplishment would not have been possible.
Shubman Gill defeats Englishman Dawid Malan and compatriot Mohammed Siraj to win the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023’s Player of the Month award for March 2023. Both players had been in exceptional form in the game’s shorter formats.
Chamari Athapaththu, the ICC Women’s Player of the Month, has long been a standout player for Sri Lanka on the international scene. However, in September, she reached new heights, winning the Player of the Month title and leading her team to a historic T20I series triumph over England.
In September, the Sri Lankan captain took the initiative to secure her team’s first series victory in any format on English soil, coming back from a first-game loss to triumph 2-1.
Chamari Athapaththu led the response in the second game in Chelmsford after nearly losing the first game due to rain. Her economical stats of one for 11 in three overs helped her restrict England to 104 runs. Her aggressive batting style was on display as she quickly reached 55 from 31 balls to secure the eight-wicket victory while chasing the modest goal.
With a historic triumph on the line, Chamari Athapaththu once more delivered.
She led her team to victory with a crucial 44 runs in 28 balls at the top of the order after three wickets for 21 runs reduced the hosts to a respectable score of 116.
“I am ecstatic to be named ICC Women’s Player of the Month. This honor belongs to our entire team, not just to me, because without them, I would not have been able to play to my strengths,” Chamari Athapaththu said.
“This award will definitely boost me, my teammates, and our fans, who have supported us wholeheartedly throughout the entire process. It will also serve as motivation for our young cricketers, illuminating the way forward for them.”
Athapaththu defeats South African contenders Nadine de Klerk and Laura Wolvaardt, who stood out in series against Pakistan and New Zealand, to take home the award.
