In a recent move, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) opted to give existing head coach Jonathan Trott, a former England batter, a one-year contract extension. Trott will lead the club through 2024 after serving a first 18-month tenure that ended in 2023.
Under Jonathan Trott direction, Afghanistan’s cricket squad made incredible strides and achieved new heights in 2023.
They triumphed against cricketing heavyweights like Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands during their outstanding performance in the ODI World Cup. Afghanistan’s campaign was memorable, even though they lost to eventual champions Australia by a slim margin.
“I’ve had a great time working with them thus far. “It will be pleasant to continue building on our World Cup success,” Jonathan Trott said with excitement in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo.
Since taking over as head coach in July 2022, Trott has been a key contributor to Afghanistan’s success, helping the team win eight of the country’s 23 ODI matches and eleven of its 26 T20I matches.
Afghanistan will travel to India after trying to win the Twenty20 International Series against the United Arab Emirates.
Afghanistan and the UAE are currently playing a three-match Twenty20 International series. Notably, the team won the first T20I match against the hosts but lost the second. As a result, the determined Asian team will try to win the series finale on January 2. In an effort to be ready for the 2017 T20 World Cup, which is set to take place in the West Indies and the USA in June, Afghanistan will then go to India to play three Twenty20 internationals against the home nation.
Notable for his outstanding tenure with the England cricket team—particularly during the 2010–11 Ashes series victory—Jonathan Trott has made an easy transition into coaching. Afghanistan hired him to be the head coach of an international senior men’s cricket team, which is his first managerial position.
Trott’s extension indicates the ACB’s faith in his ability to further develop and improve the team’s performance in the future season as Afghanistan continues to make progress in the international cricket arena. In the next few months, cricket fans will definitely be closely following Afghanistan’s progress under Trott’s leadership. Going ahead, their main priority will be the series against India.
