The Delhi Capitals have signed former Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib to play the remaining Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 in place of the injured Mitchell Marsh.
On Monday, April 22, head coach of the Delhi Capitals Ricky Ponting said that Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh would not be participating in the 17th edition of the lucrative tournament going forward. The seasoned player only made four appearances for the Capitals in the IPL 2024, amassing 61 runs. Throughout three innings, he took just one wicket.
Naib, another seam-bowling all-rounder with previous experience captaining Afghanistan’s white-ball teams, will now take Marsh’s place. The 32-year-old has scored 802 runs at a strike rate of 127.30 and an average of 21.68 in his T20I career. He has taken 26 wickets at an economy rate of 8.20 and an average of 31.27 with the ball. Before the IPL 2024, in the T20I series between Afghanistan and India, he was quite impressive. The Logar native amassed 112 runs in three games, including two half-centuries. In the series, he had an excellent strike rate of 193.10.
For the Blue Tigers, Gulbadin Naib has participated in 64 T20Is and 82 ODIs.
At his initial price of INR 50 lakh, Naib has been signed. He has never before been chosen to play for a team in the lucrative league. He will compete in the 10-team competition among a multitude of other Afghanistan players, including notables such as Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi.
The Rishabh Pant-led team has recovered well from a dismal start to the current campaign, winning three of their previous four games. They are presently ranked sixth on the points standings with four victories from nine games. The Capitals’ next game, scheduled for Saturday, April 27, against the Mumbai Indians, is scheduled for the afternoon at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The Delhi Capitals have signed former Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib to play the remaining Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 in place of the injured Mitchell Marsh.
