It was revealed that Delhi will be benching 21-year-old batter Yash Dhull as captain and appointing Himmat Singh to lead the team going forward following the team’s shocking loss to Puducherry in the current Ranji Trophy 2023–24 match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
On January 12, Delhi will play an away game against Jammu and Kashmir, with Himmat Singh leading the team. Yash Dhull was named Delhi’s captain in December 2022 and even scored a spectacular century on his captaincy debut. Dhull is the captain of India’s under-19 team, which won the World Cup in 2022.
The fact that Himmat, who is six years older than Yash Dhull, stood in as the 21-year-old’s stand-in captain during his absence gives him experience leading the team. Additionally, Singh has amassed 1174 runs at an average of 39.13. In addition, he averaged 45.25 in 22 first-class games during the previous season.
Yash Dhull is a gifted player who has fallen out of form; we wanted him to do well at bat. Joint Secretary, DDCA
The joint secretary of the Delhi Cricket Association (DDCA), Rajan Manchanda, spoke out over the appointment of Himmat Singh and the dismissal of Yash Dhull as captain. He stated that although Dhull was a skilled player, he had been out of form for a while. As a result, the side’s best interests were considered when making the decision.
“Yash has skill as a player, but his form is lacking. He was removed of captaincy duties because we wanted him to succeed as a batter. Himmat is a senior member of our team and has performed admirably. According to DDCA joint secretary Manchanda, who ESPNcricinfo cited, he will be the team’s captain.
Regarding the upcoming Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir, it has been reported that both Navdeep Saini and Ishant Sharma would not be traveling with the team. Saini has been selected for the India A team that will play England, while the veteran Sharma will only be available for the team’s home games.
